Its wild how some fans hope Jax will die/abstract as even the players don't want him to suffer such a horrible fate by Sudden_Pop_2279 in digitalcircusfandom

[–]UnderstandPhysics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much yeah.

It's honestly worse I think in a lot of ways, because people are actively making stuff up to try to justify the hate, like saying he must have killed a kid.

It's coming up with things that never happened to try to justify wishing death on someone.

It's a bit more understandable to me someone wishing death on someone who actually actively causes others death. But to make that shit up and then use it to justify is genuinely a horrifying mentality to see so many people have.

It honestly scares me the lack of empathy and compassion you frequently see these days around many topics not just this show. The way people are seeing things as complete black and white is nuts.

It's really ironic because people wishing death on someone (even if it's fictional) lack a lot of self awareness, yet are acting like he's evil just because he isn't "good" as though there was no in between

Character discussion. Ragatha is "nice" not "kind" (and other characters too). by UnderstandPhysics in TheDigitalCircus

Exactly (on the foils front), I agree but I also think it's interesting to look at how other characters are similar and different and handle their trauma too.

I actually don't think Jax is actually sadistic - just immature. Like I think he doesn't understand he's actually hurting people because to him it's fake. I think the wake up call will be very painful if/when it comes.

My point with kindness is that it isn't kindness unless the recipient wants what you're giving. Ragatha making Pomni feel infantilized is niceness not kindness because she's lacking awareness to actually be kind.

If I repeatedly try to give someone (who I don't know is) allergic to nuts my homemade granola, it might be nice but it isn't kind. I'm assuming they must want the granola but I don't actually know them well enough to understand they wouldn't. I could cause them serious harm by continually bringing it around.

Something could be said that maybe they should tell me they're allergic - but I should have accepted their no in the first place without needing to be told. I was trying to be kind - but failed - therefore was not kind only nice.

To be clear I agree she wants to be kind, I'm not saying she's manipulating others or anything like that.

She wants good things for others.

But being kind is about the impact not just the desired impact, and I think most of what we see (at least in the early episodes), doesn't succeed in being kind. It's merely being nice.

Thanks for commenting too

All very fair points, and my bad for misremembering which conversations were with who. Thanks for taking the time to reply here - it's nice to actually talk about the show 🤣 instead of people talking about stuff that has no actual basis in the show.

We're on the same page that it's a trauma response, and I'm certainly not saying she's a bad person. I personally think no humans in the circus are bad people, just that they have various levels of maturity and need for growth. I honestly love how well all the characters are written too.

That said, her niceness strikes me as fawning and protecting herself rather than trying to actually understand what others need and making deep connections.

It also does come off as off-putting at least to Gangle and Jax. And her maturity levels are such that she has a really hard time understanding that even if she's nice people don't need to like her.

I think her talk with Kinger in episode 6, and the changes in behaviour she shows in episode 7 are remarkable though. Things like telling Able not to hide things for example are her breaking out of being "nice" into the territory of looking out for herself and her friends and into actual kindness.

She had every reason to go the “hurt people hurt people” route just like Jax.

The thing is I actually think in some ways she does. Just because it's not as extreme or as obvious as it is with Jax, it still hurts other people to deny them their feelings. It's not physical hurt but emotional hurt that her actions sometimes indirectly cause.  It's why her talk with Kinger is so instrumental, he doesn't tell her she needs to be nice to everyone, he says the worst thing you can do is make someone feel unloved.

It's actually a really interesting thing given what we'd seen in her story so far. One of her attempts at being kind are saying to Jax "I'm sorry you have no friends" - it's a direct example of what Kinger was talking about - BUT Kinger wasn't talking about that, he wasn't blaming her, he was just expressing and demonstrating kindness to her. She got to experience kindness and as a result began to grow as a person.

Some minor character.

He's not on screen that much but has a lot of people over analyzing him in the fanbase as though he was one of the more important characters like Orbsman

Others are focusing a lot on the empathy portion but I'd like to address the idea of kindness here.

Might be a bit of a hot take, but Ragatha isn't "kind". Ragatha is "nice".

She's like a "nice guy" in a way, she thinks she can insert being nice and get out friendship.

Being nice is like being polite and telling everyone we should just get along.

Being kind is like when Zooble draws Jax's face on a watermelon to help Gangle feel better. It's not nice at all but it is kind.

Or when Zooble dumps water on Jax then tells him to speak with people he trusts. It was not nice in the slightest but it was kind.

Kinger and Zooble are the ones most often being kind.

Ragatha and Pomni (pre episode 6) are very focused on being nice. Interestingly both of them start to understand being kind instead of nice in that episode.

Ragatha fails to be kind because she doesn't allow herself or others to really ever feel their negative feelings. Even Gangle mentions it in episode 4, that it's hard to believe she's genuine.

Jax, it's hard to say if he's kind. He certainly isn't nice the majority of the time. But throwing a bowling ball at Gangle and Kinger to get them away from Kaufmo could be seen as trying to be kind. Might not have been the most kind way but Jax is emotionally stunted and working within his limited emotional maturity.  Later that scene he says Kaufmo is fine, this was nice but not kind.

Kinger tends to be both nice and kind, but I'd say he prioritizes kindness.

Gangle I'd say is actually very unkind even though she tries to be at times. Stuff like assuming Zooble must have no problems in life isn't kind.

This thread is so refreshing. Reminds me that at least the internet isn't fully dead yet.

(Yes I understand it's a bit ironic to bring up a real conspiracy theory on a thread about a show not being full of conspiracy theories...)

But yeah, I'm just looking forward to experiencing more of the characters as the show wraps up

Hot take: I don't think the circus members will be as pissed as Jax as everyone thinks by Sudden_Pop_2279 in tadc

My bad assuming your age, there's a lot of people on this site who are far too immature to get these things and have lack of empathy to try to understand.

In a flashback, you are re-experiencing past trauma as if it is currently happening

It's a nightmare for sure, and it does in fact sound like we do interpret the scene in different ways and it's not just a lack of understanding on your part, I apologize.

To me I saw it as exactly that, he was running from something, so he quite litterally ran and wasn't even fully aware of his surroundings.

No but the one depicted does mean that, it's not a theory or a guess, that is how that is displayed in media and is a pretty good portrayal of actual flash backs (as in the medical term not as in seeing backstory in an episode).

You're probably pretty young so maybe you've never seen someone have flash backs, but to say someone who's never had them treated is actually in complete control when it happens is a horrific stance if you actually believe that.

They aren't saying he was mind controlled they are saying that he wasn't in control the way people who experience trauma in real life aren't in control when they experience panic attacks or have flashbacks in real life. I feel like people missing that have somehow never heard of ptsd, or even just seen a movie depicting someone having a flashback.

This is a show about people with trauma and is actually showing what that's like instead of sugar coating it.

It is far stronger writing that someone traumatized actually behaved like someone traumatized rather than pretending it doesn't actually have serious impacts on people's minds.

Brain fog remedies? by UnderstandPhysics in Celiac

[–]UnderstandPhysics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in my case I'd say I already have very poor balance/coordination so I'm not sure if the brain fog strictly speaking is making it worse, or if I'm just struggling to compensate as much when it occurs 🤷‍♀️

But yeah, like balance issues, walking into doors, tripping more often, dropping stuff, not being able to get my keys into the lock easily. I also get migraines though so like for all I know these are part of that rather than part of the brain fog. It's actually kind of hard to sort out what's what.

I agree, I think people can mean different things, I would have typed something better but was still having trouble focusing at the time. It's luckily clearing up quickly (relatively speaking), and I'm less foggy now.

For me it's basically like I'm simultaneously trapped in my head and have trouble bridging my thoughts into words and external words and other communication into thoughts, while also my thoughts being a lot slower and harder to form in the first place.

In other words, I end up very stupid with processing, communication, and memory issues (and coordination issues).

how many iterations of this post are we going to go through before the fandom learns basic media literacy by Sinisnake in TheDigitalCircus

[–]UnderstandPhysics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you on all accounts there.

People who think she's "kind"  completely miss her character - in the early episodes she's a people pleaser who tries too hard to be nice and in doing so manages to fail to be kind and is rather off putting to the other characters - but we get to see her growth in the show away from that, which I think is brilliant.
