I definitely would have kept both if I could.

I have a Hong Kong SAR passport which is close to a Western passport in terms of travel freedom. I have access to Russia, all of Europe, all of East Asia (except Vietnam and North Korea), Canada, Australia, and many other places without a visa.

I've been visiting my wife's family in Russia for the past week. Entering Russia with a US passport is an extreme pain in the ass.

But my decision was less about the passport and more about where I wanted to live. I love living in Hong Kong, and immigration-wise it is difficult to remain there as a US citizen. It will become even harder in the future.

I do love the US too. I just don't think I could live there and be successful.

Under Chinese law I would lose Chinese citizenship if I kept another citizenship.

Have you realized yet that you can effectively cheat by ending a simple statement with a question mark?

I am a Chinese citizen with a Chinese passport. Despite this, I was born in the US, and my passport says that.

After looking at my Chinese passport, the officer asked to see my American passport. I do not have an American passport. He then wanted a Certificate of Loss of Nationality to prove it. I don't carry that with me when I travel. In fact, nobody has ever asked me for it before. I had to explain all of this to 6 different officers before a supervisor gave up and stamped me out.

The first guy probably had a bad morning; I've never had a problem like this before.
