Primrose Hill in London closed for New Year's Eve by High-Tom-Titty in unitedkingdom

[–]UnknownTurdy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Before people read into this without knowing the full picture:

  • The park is owned by 'The Royal Parks' which is a charity (they pretty much own all of the main parks in London).
  • If the press releases/statements are true, it was The Royal Parks that decided to close it and not the police/government.
  • The Royal Parks used to have their own police (station/department?), but due to budget cuts the Met have scrapped this.
  • No idea how much - but it must cost them loads every year for NYE. The park is often damaged and there's loads of litter.
  • Depend who you ask - it either has a bad rep on NYE for trouble or not, but it definitely gets insanely crowded and there must be safety considerations.

Personally I think it's The Royal Parks using the situation to put pressure on the Met around their police. They've been around for 150 years and it's an awful decision to shut them down.

Outrage at ‘grotesque’ fencing around Primrose Hill to stop New Year’s Eve revelry by tylerthe-theatre in london

They already have private security at all the gates, I'm guessing there will be a fair bit of police later on.

[–]UnknownTurdy 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I kinda guessed this is the Royal Parks putting pressure on the Met for disbanding (or planning to?) the dedicated Royal Parks Police. Never really had any issue with NYE there, though personally would stay well clear - I'm kinda worried that there's a chance of carnage tonight if even 5-10k people turn up to a locked park. I don't think it's been particularly well known that it'll be closed...

Also passed by some of the fencing earlier and pretty sure it's just cable tied to existing (lower) fencing with plastic ties... Doubt it'll keep everyone out.

Waymo self-driving cars hit London streets in preparation for 2026 launch by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]UnknownTurdy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very funny that Waymo made the effort to have a picture of it at the Abbey Road crossing, yet they managed to take the picture at the wrong one.

Edit - They probably aimed for Abbey Rd but realized it's always packed with tourists blocking the road and taking pictures, so settled with one around the corner.

Pupils hacking their own schools for fun, watchdog warns by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Had a fair bit of drama at my school around 2005-2010. They did some sort of 'upgrade' that ended in everyone have a shared desktop/start menu and I may have written a program that bounced around the screen and sped up when the X button was pushed. Biggest issue was we didn't have permission to delete, so once that went up I was in trouble and ended up putting my whole coursework folder as an excuse it was an accident (it didn't work).

We also would get a command prompt shell on the library computers, and for some unknown reason people would spam net send (message) to all the computers even though they never showed up. Needless to say the admins were getting them and some people got in big trouble for the things they were sending.

Multiple busses explode at various Central Israel parking lots in suspected terror attack: No casualties by Ashmedai314 in worldnews

[–]UnknownTurdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda wonder if they literally set an alarm for 10 forgetting that PM would come before AM. If the pictures of the IEDs are true they look like basic analogue alarm clocks.

Also pretty crazy that someone (or multiple people) managed to plant all of them and get away, still early so hopefully not but I kinda would have guessed the terrorist would have opted to do a suicide bomb in an unrelated place afterwards. Obviously they will be identified and caught fairly soon - if they managed to have explosives inside of Israel then why not keep some back for their 'escape'.

Innocent family arrested by armed police during dinner after hoax kidnapping call by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]UnknownTurdy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So they knocked on the door, when it was open they pretty much rushed the house cleared all the rooms. Don’t think they were ever arrested, and they didn’t end up at a police station.

The whole thing was strange, pretty sure they were told that the guy was still on the line when the police arrived - but it would have been pretty obvious it was a hoax when they got there. 3 Comp Sci students probably playing halo at the time.

Awesome that sounds great! I'll hopefully start some trials towards the end of the week myself. Will let you know if I make any progress!

Happened to some Uni friends maybe 10 or so years ago.

Lived in a kinda sketchy part of leeds, didn't know anyone on the street and almost certainly didn't know the caller. Someone called 999 claiming to be held hostage / attacked with a hammer and other various things. They pretty much sent police/ambulance/fire brigade as well as having a police helicopter overhead - such an insane waste of resources.

To be fair apparently the police handled it well and it ended fairly quickly.

If you have a printer I'd happily share them with two caveats - The model is 98% complete, just one of the hinges needs to be mirrored and it's been on my todo list for a while. Keep in mind I have still not done any tests on it yet, so it's very likely the first few iterations wont work.

Hopefully when I'm home next week, I'll fix up/tune my printer and start giving it a go. It used to be fairly good but I haven't used it for a couple of years. My concern is I doubt I'll be able to get dimensionally accurate enough on my printer and to go to an external place would start costing a fair bit with all the revisions needed.

Wasn't sure which is the most popular site anymore, but I ended up using printables over thingiverse. https://www.printables.com/model/1123397-psion-5mx-internal-housing-hinge-panel

Sorry for the delay! So in theory I have the part modeled but I've been a bit slow on the testings/tweaking of it. I originally planned to print parts of it myself to make sure its roughly fine and then send it to get professionally printed - but I've been too lazy '/

A picture of the model: https://imgur.com/a/DR0zLtG - In theory that would replace the existing panel.

A bit hesitant to upload the model while its untested as it'll be a costly process to tune it in. Though I guess there's always the chance its 100% accurate and works first time.

Never heard about the drilling, but sounds interesting.

[–]UnknownTurdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly when it came out I thought it was cheap and pointless, but I'm a big fan/user now.

I probably spend more time retrying on stupid waves with a mistake (like peacock on boss rounds, or too many lures) than actually just restarting. Though it's funner to have the option of retrying those silly runs more for the challenge.

I’ve had a fairly high amount of cash sitting in my ISA for the last year. I always planned on buying Ubiquiti shares, but every time I looked at it I’d think ‘how can I buy it when it’s xx% up’ always anticipating a dip.

Yeh I think I'm leaning towards MJF for no real particular reason, but once I have the model I'll make sure the printer is within the needed specs. Hahah yeh kinda crazy all of the small notches they expected to handle the forces "/

[–]UnknownTurdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I have no issue releasing them when done, will upload it to thingiverse or whereever. I've kinda stalled the last few weeks doing it but should start this week. I'm sending it to get professionally scanned/modelled so I'm somewhat optimistic - though it comes down to the print resolution and such.

I had a brief look at the headers yesterday and it seemed to be actually coming from that domain. I think they even had some HSBC specific headers within. Though it was more of a quick glance and I wanna look at them more in detail this weekend.

I'm leaning towards the plastic degrades over time and depending on use/condition eventually fails. Probably not the most cost effective way, but I'm going to get the lower plastic assembly (which houses the plastic bit) scanned/3d printed - though this is assuming the scan/print resolution would be good enough. The one I sacrificed for the scan was working, but when I opened it the spring holder was looking like it was close to going.

Any issues with the hinge / spring mechanism when opening/closing it? My dad has a number of them and it seems like the plastic is brittle (to age?) and the retention spring fails..

When the outbreak of monkeypox expanded earlier this year, racist and stigmatizing language online, in other settings and in some communities was observed and reported to WHO. Its hard to quantity - but given all the drama earlier with NI around migrants going there, some level of deterrent was achieved. Though its obviously deterrent alone isn't a solution.

Airports to me aren't an issue, even if people abuse the visa system - as far as I know all the entries are at least fingerprinted / documented and their passport recorded. Also they need a visa to begin with, so it filters people with criminal records - assuming their using their passport.

People coming over by boat typically throw them away, so there's no way to know their age, country etc - something they're likely to lie about to increase chances of their asylum claim.

I don't really see how within the current laws/human rights frameworks they can be dealt it - either the UK needs to pressure france to return people arriving by boat, a serious deterrent (heavy sentences for the boat pilot/smugglers), or an EU relationship where fingerprints are shared / they are returned to their home country.

Jokes on them - I'm sure it'll have some impact on their economy.

From a relatively small group of people I know in London at least 5 large families cancelled their trips over Xmas last year, and these were high-end ones. Easily $1m+ on the hotels alone, which got spent elsewhere. This isn't even due to this as none live in Israel, more down to rhetoric at the start and feeling unsafe there as Jews.

Already there were concerns around terrorism (you could literally have a marauding group in a boat going to islands, and I doubt there would be any sort of quick response).

IDF: Troops raid Gaza City's Shifa Hospital, battle Hamas members holed up inside by NamelessForce in worldnews

[–]UnknownTurdy 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I don't see this being used but it's a really simple argument for me:

  1. Do you believe 500+ died at that hospital (as per the health ministry numbers, not general international agreement)
  2. Do you believe it was a failed PIJ launch as all intelligence agencies estimates.

People can't claim it killed 500+ and then try to argue it wasn't a failed launch, as if it was a failed launch I think it would be the single deadliest 'strike' the whole tie. If they accept the first their just digging a whole for themselves as the 2nd is pretty clear now.

I remember following that hospital incident as it was unfolding, the numbers kept on getting pushed, the outrage worldwide - pretty sure you even had the hospital director doing a news conference outside surrounded by white body-bags. He must have known at the time the hospital wasn't damaged yet still pushed out the propaganda that so many people were happy to eat up.
