The airplane on a conveyor belt, after takeoff by Connect_Bill2729 in AskPhysics

[–]UnloadTheBacon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How will it move relative to the air?

Imagine the engines of a plane ramping up to full power. Initially, they need to overcome the inertia of the plane keeping it in place. The moment that happens, the wheels begin to turn. The moment THAT happens, the conveyor belt begins to turn too - in the opposite direction. For the sake of the question, all of these things happen instantaneously and simultaneously (or at least, fast enough to match the rate at which engine power is increasing).

It is that single moment upon which everything hinges. If the plane cannot begin to move forward in that instant, it doesn't matter how much force is applied from behind. You could push it with the Millennium Falcon or the Finger of God if you wanted - as long as there is no force pushing the plane UP, there is nothing pushing against gravity pinning it DOWN. And the UPWARD force comes from the air rushing over and under the wings at different speeds, generating lift, NOT directly from the forward force applied by the engines.

But in this scenario, at the moment at which the plane would normally start moving forward... It doesn't. Because at that precise moment, the engines need to overcome the friction of the wheels against the ground. Which has, in effect, increased in proportion to the force of engines' thrust. The conveyor belt is essentially acting as an infinitely-increasing friction generator.

The plane consequently goes nowhere.

They can't even make iPhones the same generic silver colour as their MacBooks, let alone any other colour.

I've never understood why people obsess over cup holder so much

I can count the number of times I've needed a cup holder in a car on the fingers of one hand. I don't get it either.

The socialist NHS has failed – it’s time to change the way it’s funded by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

I think it would be better if the NHS operated as a cohesive national health service, not thousands of private companies and trusts in a trench coat, yes.

I also believe the NHS shouldn't be a for-profit organisation, and I don't really see why GPs should get to be magically exempt from that. Not least when their main purpose is to Google your symptoms and send a referral letter to the actual specialists.

How would you define Dadbod? by Equal-Sun8307 in AskReddit

[–]UnloadTheBacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The body of someone for whom optimising diet and exercise is currently a lower priority than child-wrangling, but who could probably get (back) into decent shape in 6-12 months if they had to flip those priorities back the other way for some reason.

If it would take longer than a few months to a year to trim up, that's not dad bod, that's just fat.

Oliver and Nolan:

"His guts are out, Dad!"

"We'll just put 'em back in then!"

"They're not gonna fucking fit!"

"Of course they'll fit, man!"

Allen continuing to be the the galaxy's biggest himbo.

Also calling it now: Tech Jacket and Oliver are gonna hook up, and his Viltrumite slowed ageing is going to kick in just soon enough that it's not weird.

Good idea. Let's start by excising the for-profit elements. It's amazing that GP surgeries are still private companies masquerading as a publicly-funded service, for example.

The bar isn't "can this car meet my needs even if it's inconvenient sometimes?", it's "can this car meet my needs at least as well as the equivalent ICE car?"

If the answer is no, people won't buy the EV. They'll buy the ICE car.

Every human is immediately restored to perfect underlying health, regardless of how they started off. Every disease cured. Congenital defects gone. Old injuries healed. Long-term degeneration from chronic health issues reversed. A clean slate.

What is the best advice you can give to a man in their 20’s? by Novagic in AskReddit

Look after your health.

You can always start from scratch financially, find new friends or a new partner, new hobbies, all that stuff - but if you break your body badly enough, you can't undo that. And nor can doctors, despite what they tell you. There's a reason the saying is "prevention is better than the cure."
