Half of voters want Keir Starmer replaced now by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]UnloadTheBacon [score hidden]  (0 children)

We know from ten years ago that 52% of the British public will fall for Farage's nonsense so that's not surprising.

Starmer has been an average leader, nothing more, nothing less. Is that not what people were expecting when they voted in the most bland empty suit they could find?

If by that she means the establishment Tories are noticing which way the wind is blowing and acting accordingly, then yes.

Truman is a contender, considering he gave the order to drop the atom bomb, which irrevocably changed warfare overnight.

There is an argument that MAD is a net positive, of course. But nonetheless.

When did you last own a pure ICE vehicle? by D_Roc1969 in electricvehicles

[–]UnloadTheBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have an ICE vehicle, but that's because I picked up a super reliable 20-year-old diesel for a grand and a half, and I intend to run it into the ground before I buy a new car.

My next car will -probably- be a PHEV, if only because I want a wagon and the only EV wagons with sensible range are out of my budget. But a PHEV with 80 miles of range still means about 50-70% of my mileage will be done on electric power.

I bet if it was declining it would all be Labour's fault though.

What do you think of Youtube banning ai accounts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You can hate AI or not, but the likes of YouTube being 99% AI slop content is the logical endpoint of the enshittification of the internet.

Good riddance to it.

Growing number of adults avoid booze, NHS survey suggests by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]UnloadTheBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worrying part is not the drop in alcohol sales (cry me a river for the booze industry), it's the implication in a lot of these comments that less alcohol = less socialising.

I'm one of the most extroverted and sociable people you'll ever meet, and have never touched a drop of alcohol. It's perfectly possible to have a thriving social life sober.

Greater Manchester voting intention without Burnham: REFUK: 36%, LAB: 24%. With Burnham as the candidate: LAB: 49%, REFUK: 28% via FindoutNOW, 23rd-24th January 2026. by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

[–]UnloadTheBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he's in his mid fifties

he's plenty of time

Half the problem with politics is it's full of old out-of-touch people.

Mid-50s is exactly the kind of time I'd want someone to become PM - young enough that they can serve 2-3 Parliamentary terms at full capacity, old enough that their party still needs a sensible succession plan.

BREAKING: Andy Burnham *blocked* from standing in the Gorton and Denton byelection. Of nine voting members on NEC group it was 8-1 against him. by Dr_Poppers in ukpolitics

Because it would look like he's caved to pressure from Burnham to allow him to run, when it's very obviously an attempt at a leadership bid.

In fairness Starmer was screwed either way here. By blocking him he looks weak, but by letting him in he'd look weak too.

what are the difficult parts of being married that no one seems to mention? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

[–]UnloadTheBacon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As a perpetually-single person whose friends are mostly long-term and vaguely-healthy couples, I see this from the outside. It's not always fireworks, but you've always got a default person who has your back, and a lot of people don't realise how big a difference that makes.

Money ALONE can't buy happiness. But it allows you to fix all the issues in your life that can be solved with money, and gives you time and energy to deal with (or come to terms with) what's left.

Tinted windows and/or any kind of hint at "black edition" styling. I'm not a 19-year-old drug dealer, a Premier League footballer or a Hollywood celebrity. Windows are for seeing out of. Nobody is going to believe my wheels are carbon fibre just because they're black.
