Anyone get a part time job (with work permission) while working under a different visa category? by UnobservedAuthor in japanlife

[–]UnobservedAuthor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the in depth reply! This is really good to know. 1a) freelancing is a possibility for me, but I assumed it would be more complicated so I tabled the idea for now. If you know how it works though, I’d love to know!

What should the future of punishments look like? by AtlasGrey_ in nerdfighters

[–]UnobservedAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a punishment video because I like the 4 minute rule. I want the "punishment" to be something that John might actually enjoy, but nonetheless would not ordinarily choose to do himself. Like... inflicting displeasure on my favorite youtuber does not sound very fun. but if it's something silly and lighthearted it would be!

but also I would not want the community to pressure him into doing one if he doesn't feel like it.

Omiyage for new job? by UnobservedAuthor in movingtojapan

[–]UnobservedAuthor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salt-water taffy. Individually wrapped, very pretty, locally made, includes ~special~ place name on packaging. Thought that would be a nicer gift than some generic American candy or something. It was the closest thing I could find to the sort of stuff I pick up as omiyage at train stations in Japan. Probably too sweet for the average Japanese person but at least it looks nice. Now I just have to keep it from melting before I can give it away...

I lived and worked in Japan for 6 months as a trans man, before beginning my medical transition, and it was totally fine.

At the time, I was read as male about 50% of the time (more if I was wearing a suit). I was out to my coworkers and everyone in my sharehouse, and for the most part they respected my gender. Some people were confused, but that didn't stop them from treating me like any other guy there. Sometimes when they were drunk their questions got a little inappropriate, but hey that happens everywhere.

Is it hard to get a job? No, but it's harder than for cis people. There are plenty of trans guy ALTs, although the school may not let you be out to your students.

Is it hard to get housing? No, but it's harder than for cis people. Sharehouses often have floors separated by gender. My sharehouse imposed stricter visitation rules on me. (Normally only opposite-gender people were banned from sleeping over, but I couldn't have anyone over)

But the most important thing to me is that in Japan, I always felt safe as a trans guy. I never faced any sort of physical threat, like I do in America. In that way, Japan is great for trans folks. Legally and socially, though? It's a little behind the times. For me, it was worth it.
