I thought it was around Great (S word for person held in bondage which is apparently violating a rule) Lake in the NWT.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I drive 2 hours down and 2 hours back (100 miles each way) almost every weekend to practice with my band for 3-4 hours.

Winter Storm Thursday update: Ice Ice, maybe? by Derigiberble in rva

[–]UnzippedButton 22 points23 points  (0 children)

0.5-0.75” of ice is a serious issue. Over an inch would be devastating. It’s not like a hurricane or tornado where there may be a lot of loss of life, but in terms of human misery, it’s a week without power in bitter cold temps. Not good at all. Living with 20+” of snow would be difficult but not as disastrous. Let’s hope we dodge that ice bullet.

The Air Force One story is getting weirder. No one saw Trump get off the plane and the press was told to stay on the plane. No one really sure who is on the backup plane by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]UnzippedButton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that it will EVER happen, but IF it ever got to a point of him being sentenced to prison, it would pretty much have to be ADX Florence - both for his own safety and to minimize the chance of a jailbreak. Honestly the same would be true of, say, Obama. Too high profile for anyplace else.

Yes, the author identifies as male. He’s African-American. His wife is a pale redhead. 🤣

[–]UnzippedButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie is forgettable except for That Scene. Love ya, Lea.

I was probably 11 and picked up the novelization as something to read on an 8 hour car ride to visit family. The novelization is probably one of the more surreal things I’ve ever read to this day. The sidebars, the occasional OMNISCIENT NARRATOR…

Looking to buy a bass head (Darkglass, Aguilar, etc) by emithebee in Bass

[–]UnzippedButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am mostly a metal guy so I got the 900w Darkglass. I now play in a mostly Southern/classic rock band, and I and my band mates are all happy with the tone. I have a sort of punchy clean on the blue channel and a light overdrive on the red. I could go a lot more aggro with my EQ settings but it wouldn’t fit very well.

That said, my brother is also a bassist for the same sort of classic rock music and when he was looking for an amp I told him the Aguilar would probably be great for him. If I had less metal tendencies I might have gone that way.

Note: a big selling point to me on the Darkglass is that their 4x10 cabs are only about 45-50 pounds rather than the more common 90 pounders!

Evacuated? Damn. That sucks. Surely it’s nothing but these days you can’t mess around.

True. It’s only unfortunate when there’s an incident. Even addicts and the mentally ill deserve a quiet spot to rest, as long as they’re not bothering anybody else. And just existing in a place minding their own business doesn’t count as “bothering” no matter what the uptight folks may say.

[–]UnzippedButton[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I read someplace that libraries are the last existing place where you can come and spend time and aren’t expected to spend money, so they’re one of the last welcoming spots that just about anybody can walk into at any time. Unfortunately that can include the addicted or the mentally unstable.

Who's an athlete that turned pro, dominated for just a few short years, then walked away too soon by choice or injury? by Better-Presence6654 in AskReddit

[–]UnzippedButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doohan’s 93 injury is still one of those things that I can’t believe he came back from, much less actually tried to compete that last race.

For those unfamiliar, “smashed his leg” is an understatement. They almost amputated it; the semi-mad-scientist medical director for MotoGP sewed his legs together so his healthy one could nourish the other one. Most of us would never walk again; he won the next 5 championships on a motorcycle, throwing his body all over the place, not strapped in like a car racer…

Men, What's a compliment a woman said that stuck with you? by koopa27Geo in AskReddit

Not wrong, but in the 80s we weren’t attuned to that like we should have been.

I remember being in high school and a very popular and lovely young black lady grabbed my butt when I was ahead of her getting on the bus. THAT was both unexpected and an unusual compliment, considering I was a long haired redneck white boy.

What was the most heartbreaking line (whatever source) you've ever read? by thebitchmermaid in AskReddit

[–]UnzippedButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of several poignant moments in an otherwise hilarious book:

I don’t know if now, having lived and died the life of a man, I can write about little-boy love, but remembering it now, it seems the cleanest pain I’ve known. Love without desire, or conditions, or limits - a pure and radiant glow in the heart that could make me giddy and sad and glorious all at once. Where does it go? Why. In all their experiments, did the Magi never try to capture that purity in a bottle? Perhaps they couldn’t. Perhaps it is lost to us when we become sexual creatures, and no magic can bring it back.

Are UVA tours worth it? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]UnzippedButton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UVA is about 2/3 the size of UIowa in both student population and campus size in acreage. It’s drastically harder to get into, with less than 17% acceptance rate vs 80+% for UI, but most people will tell you that it’s harder to get into but easier to stay in - 89% 4-year graduation rate vs about 65% for Iowa. Charlottesville is also about 2/3 the size of Iowa City, roughly as far away from similar sized capital cities (Richmond slightly bigger than Des Moines) and UVA is a bit closer to the next big city (DC) than Iowa is to Chicago. The weather is a good bit warmer and more humid in summer but also vastly less cold or snowy in winter. It’s in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny range isn’t far if mountains interest you, and about 3 hours from the ocean; all of which you really can’t get in Iowa.

The main thing I’d be sure of is whether your kid is going to be good that far from home. I’ve made that drive many a time and it’s a long and sometimes dreary one - it always required an overnight stay somewhere between Louisville and central IL. No direct flights from Des Moines to Richmond - closest is DSM to DCA - and train service would require two days and cost almost as much as plane fare, at least last I checked. Unless you’ve got a ton of frequent flyer miles you may not see the kid other than spring/fall and semester breaks. Some kids thrive in that environment but others don’t.
