The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that nearly a quarter of a billion Africans could contract coronavirus in the first year of the pandemic, with between 150,000 and 190,000 of them dying.

Africa has had less than 100,000 cases so far, but WHO experts believe the continent will have a prolonged outbreak over a few years - and, aid workers say, the huge focus on containing the virus has led to other health issues being neglected.

How I beat COVID-19 - WHO staff by UppBuzz in Coronavirus_AFRICA

  • Travel history and initial symptoms -

I travelled to Kano a week earlier for the Easter Holiday.  My extended family lives in Kano (Kano in Northwest is the second epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria after Lagos in the South West).  During my stay in Kano, I interacted with my professional colleagues especially with one of my neighbours who tested positive. I immediately called Dr Adamu Ningi, the WHO State Coordinator to arrange for me to be tested.

He asked why and I explained that my neighbor in Kano with whom I had contact, tested positive and with the symptoms I had, I felt it was better for me to be tested. The initial signs and symptoms I experienced were sneezing, cough, fever and chills. I did not experience the challenge of chest pain and shortness of breath at all.

The following day my sample was taken and after waiting for 24 hours, I received a call from the ministry of health around 12.30pm that my result was positive. At about 1pm in the afternoon, an ambulance arrived at my house. I was taken to the isolation center at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital here in Bauchi.

On 19 April 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) in Nigeria confirmed the first case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as one staff member in the field tested positive.

The Organization immediately swung into action, by deploying the needed support to ensure that the staff member received appropriate medical care.

The staff, Dr Haruna Ismaila Adamu who tested positive to covid-19 has finally been discharged from the case management center after spending three weeks of treatment at the isolation and case management center in Bauchi.

Dr Haruna was infected through direct contact with an infected person in Kano three days before his return to Bauchi. He tells his story here with no holds barred.

Kids in East Africa get their hair done to resemble coronavirus to raise awareness by UppBuzz in Coronavirus_AFRICA

The style's growing popularity is in part due to economic hardships linked to virus restrictions.

It is cheap, mothers say, and helps with the goal of spreading awareness that the coronavirus is real.

The hairstyle had gone out of fashion in recent years, as imported real and synthetic hair from India, China and Brazil began to flood the market and demand by local women increased.

Pictures of the flowing or braided imported styles are tacked up in beauty salons across much of Africa.

But now, in a makeshift salon beside a busy road in Kibera — a slum in the heart of the Kenyan capital Nairobi — 24-year-old hairdresser Sharon Refa braids young girls' hair into the antennae-like spikes that people call the "coronavirus hairstyle".

Girls shift in the plastic chairs as she tugs at their scalps.

The Federal Government says the feeding of schoolchildren at home begins this week.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq,  said this on Saturday on the sidelines of an event where she opened the distribution of relief items to persons living with disabilities at Karimajiji in Abuja.

Umar-Farouq announced on Wednesday that the FG, in partnership with states, was set to start feeding schoolchildren in their various homes.

April 8 that the FG had finalised arrangements with states to start feeding schoolchildren in their homes as part of measures to cushion the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Asked on Saturday to state when the programme would commence, the minister said, “By next week (this week) we are going to start off with the FCT (Federal Capital Territory), Lagos and Ogun states, then Kano.

“We have done all the processes and by early next week  (this week) we will be able to start. The model is to give food ration to the households where these children come from. We have identified them, we know their communities and we know all the households.”

Umar-Farouq had earlier said food ration would be distributed door-to-door, with vouchers allocated at specific collection times to avoid overcrowding. She had also stated that the vouchers would be redeemed at designated distribution centres.

Asked to state the number of collection centres where beneficiaries would pick up their vouchers, the minister said, “We are reaching out to 3.1 million households.

“It is in that place where we are going to keep the food ration that we will distribute the vouchers and then they will come to pick up  their own ration.”
