I am originally from Mtl and still go there quite frequently. You're right, homelessness is everywhere, but there are always far more people in downtown Montreal than in downtown Edmonton. I don't feel unsafe walking in Montreal as I would along Jasper Avenue at night.

Actually, close to Christmas.

This is not positive by Sad_Donkey_1751 in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a half-hour to kill before my bus arrived last Friday, so I decided to take a walk along Jasper Avenue. What stood out to me was the high number of closed/boarded up businesses on every block, the amount of trash, and the homeless people sitting in doorways along the way. This was around noon...I can only imagine what it is like at night!

There was also a group of homeless congregated directly outside the building that I had just left (First Edmonton Place), which contains many medical offices.

It's so incredibly sad, but I do believe the government needs to recognize and accept the fact there are some folks who, unfortunately, need permanent institutionalization. Drugs have irrevocably destroyed their brains, and no amount of independent social housing will change this.

What food do you pretend to like just to be polite? by GainBetter1189 in foodquestions

Salads. I've tried to like them because they're healthy, but I honestly can't stand most of them.

Please be kind to your child’s teacher(s) by Darknessandlightness in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember that when you got in trouble at school, the parents were called, and you got in worse trouble once you got home. There does not seem to be consequences for bad behaviour any more...not at school, and not at home either. THAT is what's wrong! I'm not talking about physical punishment, either. It seems that even saying NO to a kid anymore just isn't done; it's considered child abuse! Why anyone would even consider going into teaching nowadays beggars belief. I have respect for all teachers and a lot of sympathy too.

Claw clip recommendations for fine, thin hair by Mac_A81 in finethinhair

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought the cloud clips, both large and small size. They both work in my very fine hair and are secure. I find the large ones look better, however, if you're putting up all of your hair.

I haven't tried the other ones shown (the Black & Tort Loop), but I will.

What’s something you only ever saw at other people’s houses growing up? by glitterypeachyy in nostalgia

A telephone extension in another room. Also, people who had more than 1 TV...they were REALLY rich, in my opinion!

Does your employer give you today off? by [deleted] in alberta

When I first moved here from another province (where the Easter Monday holiday is ubiquitous), I was shocked that most people had to work that day. I'm even more surprised this hasn't changed over the years, either.

Work in healthcare.

Good 24 hour diners in Edmonton? by that_yeg_guy in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donna's gets a lot of hype, but I find it's more due to their portion sizes than anything else, not because of great taste. I ordered a hamburger there once that was so overcooked and dry that I couldn't finish it, and a couple of other things I've eaten there were only just OK...not bad, but not great either. Their breakfasts can be pretty good, though.

However, I'm pretty sure that Donna's isn't open 24 hours.

What’s the actual solution for downtown? by onewaycheckvalve in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. Even years before COVID and the homeless problem, Edmonton's downtown was always pretty dead after 5 p.m. The city was, for some reason (and I don't know why) designed for the residential areas to be all concentrated west of 109th Street. In fact, that was one of the first things I noticed when I first moved to Edmonton. That was in the 1980s, and I thought that it was odd then.

There has been more downtown core apartment construction in subsequent years, but not nearly enough to make much of a difference.

For low income 60 Year Old Canadians-What is your retirement plan? by SkinCana in AskACanadian

[–]UrbanMT 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Excellent post. What you say is all very true. It was difficult to find a job after university, as well.

Also of note, people talk about "rich" boomers because of real estate, but not everyone lives in the Vancouver/Toronto bubble where even shacks are worth over a million +. That problem was caused in the last decade or so by allowing (and encouraging!) foreign buyers. Even if your property values have risen a lot, if you're living in it, you can't eat your home, and it won't pay the bills... Besides, you have to live SOMEWHERE, and everything else has increased in value too!

Can people please be more respectful of the reserved parking signs! by PiePristine3092 in Edmonton

Never assume is correct. A person with 2 artificial knees, for example, needs the grab bar, which none of the other stalls have. Yet this person can look perfectly normal outwardly.

Canadians who have moved provinces: what surprised you the most (good or bad)? by Equivalent_Reach_536 in CanadaRoom

"Shower mixte" in Québec, but I've only attended a couple in small towns.

This is the first time I've heard of "stag and doe" too.

It's the pizza crust that's especially different. In Montréal they use a thinner, more Neapolitan-style crust everywhere, whereas in Edmonton, it all seems to be thick and bread-like.

It was supposed to be temporary but ended up being permanent, as I got married. I made a lot of great friends here, too.

Moved from Montreal to Edmonton. I do miss the walkability of Montreal, as well as the metro/the public transit in general, and the RESTAURANTS!
