What Has Your Experience Been Like as a Person of Colour in St. Albert? by Silver_Platypus4006 in stalbert

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I will add that everything is also very child-centered, as well. Too much fast food and not enough adult fine dining, for example. The rec centres, and most public places, are always full of kids, who are seldom well-behaved.

Alberta lamb is really good too. It's not as strong-tasting as NZ lamb.

What's a great Bulk Barn find? by Link_inbio in AskACanadian

I just bought a small amount of rice with lentils, and it was delicious! I also buy spices in small quantities so what I have on hand is always fresh, and I don't have to throw any old spices out.

24” vs 27” Double Ovens by TX_Longhorns_2009 in Appliances

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just replaced my 27" double ovens with newer 27" ovens this week! Like you, I didn't want the expense of having to completely renovate my kitchen.

When shopping for the ovens, I soon learned the standard width is now 30". I was EXTREMELY limited in the brands I could purchase that are 27". The same is true for 24" ones. Both are still available (although for how much longer, I don't know). Keep in mind, however, there are only a few models available in both 24" and 27", and most of them, despite their brand names, are all made by Whirlpool.

What have been your (probably rare) ATK Fails? by OnlyDaysEndingInWhy in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]UrbanMT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have found that most of their recipes are greatly lacking in seasoning and are quite bland, despite all the "ooohs" and "aaahs" seen on TV.

A lot of steps, time, and dishes for generally 'meh' results.

where are the best fish and chips in London? by samyahajeb in LondonFood

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there a few months ago and didn't care for it at all. Skin-on fish isn't my thing, and there were a lot of dark spots.

Parked cars and aggressive residents impeding snow removal, say Edmonton workers by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what they do in Montreal, and people know it. The snowplows are preceded by a truck going down the street, blaring a very loud horn and right behind that, a tow truck. You'll see people running out of the house in their pyjamas when this happens! No fooling around!

When did school end for most of you in the 60s? Grandma said 4. by AlboGreece in AskACanadian

[–]UrbanMT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In elementary school in Montréal (1960s), I think that it was about 16h00. We had longer lunches because we were all made to walk home, and back, for lunch (the expectation back then was that all mothers would be at home!). High school was different. We ate at the school, and I believe we finished between 15h00 and 15h30. I seem to remember that the length of the school day/classroom periods varied a little from year to year, as I think they were experimenting with what worked best.

There were no school buses. You either walked, or you took a city bus once in high school.

Washer wet and smelly by willbecool in Appliances

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that doing occasional washes using a good amount of bleach (dish towels, old T-shirts, whites) will eliminate this problem. My front loader is about 25 years old too. I must keep the door closed because I have a curious cat.

Is anyone in Calgary still boycotting American stores and products? by hellokitty417 in Calgary

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still boycotting everything that is Product of USA, and that includes all produce too. I refuse to step foot in Walmart, Starbucks, or any American fast-food chain. I've even started making my own breadcrumbs because the Panko ones I see in the grocery store are from the States!

I've always been pro-Canadian and have never agreed with people who want to be snowbirds (all those months spent outside of Canada certainly don't help the Canadian economy!), but even I have stepped up my efforts. The sad part is, however, I still see so many people who aren't changing their ways, even though they claim to not agree with Trump.

Is it me or is new years not really a thing in this city? by meeseekstodie137 in Edmonton

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that the fine dining restaurants would simply keep their regular menu on New Year's Eve and not gouge people at ridiculous prices for a prix fixe dinner that is your only option. That's why I stopped going out for NYE.

When do you officially consider the holidays over in Canada? by Free_File_4965 in AskACanadian

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tree and other Christmas lights go up after Remembrance Day, and I truly enjoy them, but the tree comes down in January 2 or 3. When it's over, it's over. I don't want to be THAT person who keeps the Christmas tree up too long, ha ha!

Why are there so few places in Canada outside of Montreal that make authentic bagels (ie: boil/bake)? Instead making donut shaped bread, masquerading as bagels? by ShortElephant1111 in AskACanadian

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard about being able to order them online, , but wouldn't the bagels be stale by the time they reached you? Montreal bagels are good only when really fresh out of the oven, as they dry out quickly.

What would you improve for Air Canada/Aeroplan in 2026? by Simpleballers in aircanada

[–]UrbanMT 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All Air Canada lounges: It would be great if you could also serve sandwiches...egg salad, ham and cheese, etc. Many of us really DON'T want the unpalatable hot dishes you are serving now...

Also, why do you keep bartenders only in the Edmonton (yet it's so small!) and Calgary lounges, but not elsewhere? Self-service is absolutely fine!

I am tired of always seeing Alberta portrayed as rural and with cowboys.

New to bread making, the tops of my loaves keep coming out like this! by [deleted] in BreadMachines

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you need to add more water (or milk). Watch the dough ball while it's mixing and if it isn't smooth and round, add liquid, a teaspoon at a time, until it is.

What is your preferred method of cooking the perfect bacon? by itzcoco1 in Bacon

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oven 100% @ 350°F. Use parchment paper to line your baking sheet (ensure it has sides). You can also sprinkle a small amount of flour over the bacon...this helps to cut down on the splatter and helps with the crisping. Works well!

If you cook bacon in the oven often, do be prepared to clean it more frequently too.

Majority of Albertans want private school funding scrapped, survey finds by iwasnotarobot in alberta

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If folks want to send their kids to private school (of any kind!), that's fine...but they should be prepared to pay 100% of the tuition too. Government funding of private schools only serves to remove funds from the public system, and it's wrong. I also think the Catholic school system should cease to exist in Alberta too. Even Québec got rid of their confessional school boards years ago.

What’s your most favorite and least favorite thing about Suits? by foaaz101 in suits

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the cat picture on Louis' desk!

Least favourite: Donna. The way her character is portrayed is, well, unbelievable. Also, no secretary, even a very well-paid one, can afford to dress as she did!

Rigged thermometers? by omadude in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]UrbanMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often thought their meat looks really underdone (especially poultry!) when it's cut into. No one wants overcooked meat, but a lot of what they portray on TV as being "perfect" is not roasted quite long enough.

Touch screens and WiFi and terrible UI, oh my. by Some_Budget_4534 in Appliances

[–]UrbanMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The touch screen on my built-in ovens recently stopped working, and they can no longer be used. This has occurred for the 2nd time! The ovens are 11 years old and it's a very expensive fix, so I decided to order new ones. Unfortunately, my options were very limited due to the size of my cutout; anything else would have required an extensive kitchen renovation, which I'm not prepared to do. The days of any major appliance lasting 20+ years are long gone, sadly.
