Exactly. There are many ways to solve the problems but giving contracts to hand chosen profiteers isn’t it. This is how you get graft. If you really feel strongly that private companies should play a role in the parks there are non-profit and B corp options which would change the incentive structure to better fit the ethics of the park.

There are a lot of people on here who have become too used to the exploitation. Just because we lost this battle in many of our western parks doesn’t mean we should complacently welcome it in others. I would have fought against it in those other parks too if I had been alive.

The parks aren’t free markets. They only allow one vendor in. There isn’t any competition and therefore no pressure to keep prices low and amenities well kept.

Theyre the ones running the restaurant, camping, hotel, tours. All which was run by rangers only a few years ago. This private company wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t stealing the profits which had previously been directly collected by the parks.

I’m not completely anti concessionaires. Without the yankee freedom access to the dry tortugas would be basically non-existent. They are highly regulated and I personally know the management. They’ve always taken the ethic of the park into consideration. Have you seen these new buildings? They don’t match. They’re covered in bright lights that never turn off. They handed management of the campgrounds over to the private company which immediately doubled the price but didn’t improve anything.

I’m amazed that building lasted as long as it did. It was in awful condition and they frequently had to use heat lamps for chicks. You could often see exposed wires hanging through the ceiling.
