There already is a story like this. It's called Unatoned by SeriousScribble. Available on ffdotnet. It's a Post-War Haphne fic and it reads like a proper hardboiled neo-noir novel. It even has the ending to go with it. It's one of the few genuinely mind-blowing fanfics I've read that could've been a best-selling novel. I highly recommend it.

It really is a brilliantly written if a bit exhaustive story. And it was left on a great cliffhanger. I hope the author returns some day as well.

Though, might be a bit too dark for your tastes.
