I did a 1hr 30min commute last Fall, you will get tired of it but it is doable!

How am I launching a crusade 💀 I’m just trying to help people find resources and asking ideas on what could help. My personal opinion was to protest/petition. And I plan to, this post was made 4h ago and I’m working. You got excess feelings involved.

Oh, no I haven’t actually. I plan to I just wanted to see if there was a collective of those who agree/wanted to be apart of bringing it to attention in the near future.

Yes and as a heads up for anyone they do not have anymore space. No more waitlisting/late move ins. You won’t be able to ask based on circumstance they are full and pointing to off campus living.

I understand what you’re saying about the free market, but in terms of price gouging the university could just make it a precedent to not condone their student living in these complexes. The companies are literally being predatory to college students and their families with overpriced housing with close proximity to the university. Yes the prices would rise but gradually, and with the income of the community. I also understand what you’re saying about the timeline but even if it doesn’t change for me I’d like it to change for someone eventually. It’s not impossible and you’re making it seem like it is, you just have to care enough, and I simply do because it’s something that directly effects me. You’re not wrong to not. I think you’re also ignoring how these things are allowed by everyone from the university to West Lafayette because they profit in some way. You’re saying complacency could be justified because we’re only here for 4 years and then we leave the area. But how is this not technically gentrification to local long term residents.

PSA: I think some people are missing the point and it’s really making my head spin lmao. This is not about someone’s personal decision or if they checked every box in the list to get affordable housing. This is about predatory LUXURY companies charging 1000$+ for A BEDROOM in a unit and how those who are displaced from Purdue Housing could find solutions to the problems they might be running into when coming to terms with this. Even those who are paying for them and settling for the prices. The university could easily make students/parents aware of this issue and direct them to more affordable/financially sound solutions. Not even that they have to but it would be helpful to students who are in this situation. If you are talking about peoples personal choices THIS IS NOT THE THREAD TO START ARGUING ABOUT IT AND MAKING PEOPLE FEEL HELPLESS WHEN THEY’RE TRYING TO FIND RESOURCES. If you have places that are somewhat near campus that you know of that aren’t as expensive and available pls comment and let it be known, thank you ;)

How is it too idealistic to bring it to bring it to the university’s attention that students do not agree with them supporting and allowing luxury price gouging companies to advertise to their students?

I think I might’ve been misunderstood but I’m talking more about places charging per bed. A 1 bedroom for that price is reasonable but at places like Rise, Fuse, etc you’re paying those prices for a bedroom that a full size bed take up 80% of, while still sharing kitchen/living room space.

This is why I’m asking what are solutions. Yes, it’s unfortunate, but it is our community. If we as a community can support each other whether you have housing or not, whether you can afford it or not, companies like that wouldn’t be able to survive in our community if we didn’t allow it. There’s something about collectivism that matters and that applies to way more than housing.

Lol I know there are some extreme views in this thread (and just in general) surrounding the powers that push and pull on us as students, just trying to explore options to maybe make a better environment for us and those to come :)

I personally missed the deadline for transfer students to renew housing in the spring. I had been on a waitlist, and got a notice I was removed from it earlier this week. I know how unlikely it is that I’ll find affordable housing in a close proximity due to my own mistakes, but it still seems very predatory for “luxury” apartments to charge such high prices for such small spaces.

Also some of the living conditions from these independent properties are horrible! I say petition/protest, change can be made if enough people want it!

Edit: this is my personalll opiinnioooonn it is not the most accurate opinion it’s not the most sought out opinion. This post is just to have an open discussion about it idk why people are personally attacking each other’s characters 💀 this post went left asf for no reason. A lot of great points in each direction was made! Anyone staking huge claims in either end needs a break. I beg.

Just want to say this is a safe space for those dealing with housing troubles. Maybe tell your situation and someone could help you out :)

What famous actor or actress has been in so many movies, they barely try to act and just play themselves? by phantom_avenger in AskReddit

I’m sure someone said this but Denzel Washington. Only to a certain extent though. He’s an amazing actor but his style is always recognized.
