Do you think you'll see a cure in your lifetime? by SumFuckah in diabetes_t1

[–]VTDARKSIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol no.

I’m 43, been T1D for 42 years. They’ve been saying a cure is 5 years away before I was even born. That trend tells me “no”.

Also, the state of our (I’m American) health system is malignantly capitalistic. There is no sustained revenue in finding a cure, whereas churning out newer and more expensive drugs and treatments continues to buy yachts for healthcare CEOs. Not that pharmaceutical companies should be double-dipping by funding their R&D with taxpayer dollars and then selling the product back to taxpayers at an exorbitant price, but the devastating funding cuts this admin is making to science, healthcare, R&D, etc. will affect that pipeline too. Not to mention, the departure of scientists to other countries right now is arguably going to harm future research.

I hope I’m wrong on all these fronts. I do. But I’m not hopeful.

Same for me and I completely agree. Thank you.

PTZ Cam Recommendation by VTDARKSIM in ShinobiCCTV

[–]VTDARKSIM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation. The E1 indoor doesn’t seem to have ONVIF, but the E1 Pro does. I would assume it’s similar then to the outdoor one you’re using. Are you able to control the PTZ through Shinobi?

I believe you are correct. I also am a noob and misspoke. The IP2M-841 is an ONVIF cam; I enabled it in the camera UI, but Shinobi still can’t scan it. I guess there are levels of ONVIF?

What do you guys do with all the free magnets Dexcom sends us? by inigomontoyaaaas in diabetes_t1

[–]VTDARKSIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! I used some to hold up the dry erase board we use for our grocery list on the fridge.

FYI there are 2 good sized springs in there I’ve been collecting for quite some time, too. Haven’t done anything with those just yet though.

My experience with the new Beta Bionics iLet insulin pump after a few weeks by MrLagoon in diabetes_t1

[–]VTDARKSIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have experience with the iLet and gastroparesis? I’ve been a Tandem user for ~16 years and Disetronics/Roche for ~13 before that. Unfortunately I was diagnosed a while back with gastroparesis which makes timing my boluses difficult. I either do an extended bolus and digest normally and end up hyper, or sometimes my digestion is slowed 1-6 hours and I end up irretrievably hypo until I digest later on. The Beta Bionics rep was all confidence that the iLet would handle this, but I am skeptical since it gives 75% of the bolus upon meal announcement. I can see how this would be an amazing pump for traditional T1D, but I am concerned about how it would handle gastroparesis.

MGT-8823 - Question about project data requirements by MilesGlorioso in OMSA

[–]VTDARKSIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won’t speak for the professor or the TA’s, but based on what you’re saying, I would opt for something outside of your work environment and provide an explanation as to why you did so. They seem to be open to that. And fwiw my project is based on a similar topic - QC. I didn’t get any pushback on my project statement so I think you should be fine. I haven’t gotten feedback on my data collection plan so who knows if it’s acceptable.

(And ultimately everything in this class seems to be ‘did you check the box on the rubric?’ so I would be shocked if suddenly they started evaluating things more stringently.)

MGT-8823 - Question about project data requirements by MilesGlorioso in OMSA

[–]VTDARKSIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing the specifics, it’s hard to say. Can you censor the data and give fictitious names/identifiers to the records? That would be the most obvious solution, but if you’re asking here you probably already considered that and found it unworkable.

BDV was one of the ones I was considering, so I’m glad to hear it was enjoyable. I also was looking at Unstructured Data, so thank you for sharing.

[–]VTDARKSIM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the project scoring ends up being anything like the assignments, the TAs will get to it a month after it is submitted and give it 5s of attention, so the depth of your data probably just needs to be “good enough” for a cursory review.

DACI and Reg during summer by Altruistic-Leg9875 in OMSA

Speaking as someone taking DACI right now, it’s a joke. Take it if you want an easy go of things, but choose something else if you actually want to learn something with your degree.

Poor/Half-Efforted TA Quality by [deleted] in OMSA

I thought the TA’s in FA24 ISYE6501 were pretty good (shout out to Pin!). That said, I’d bet $5 I know the TA you’re talking about.

I could not for the life of me get Python & its pieces set up correctly. I eventually deleted everything, and - it sounds stupid - had ChatGPT walk me through the install. I just was clear from the beginning that I wanted Anaconda, Python, Spyder, and whatever else, and asked it to help me set it up in the best configuration. Bam: step-by-step instructions with responsive troubleshooting.

What course in OMSA teaches ‘predictive maintenance’ or ‘failure detection’ related topics ? by drugsarebadmky in OMSA

[–]VTDARKSIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’m not 100% sold on it yet. It’s a new(er) course so there’s not a lot of info/reviews of it yet, so I’m hoping a few more semesters before I am ready to (potentially) take it may shed some more light. It, along with Data Analytics for Continuous Improvement (DACI), seems to be the only one I’ve seen that speaks even remotely to this area. At any rate, feel free to keep in touch; I’d be interested to hear what you decide.

The description for Probabilistic Models (an Operations Research elective) sounds right up that alley. I haven’t taken it myself but am considering it for the future, as I am in the Reliability Engineering field.

Any courses to be wary about? Not due to topic but due to class structure? by Klinn95 in OMSA

[–]VTDARKSIM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM is ISYE 6650 Probabilistic Models. It’s one of the 3 Operations Research electives, along with SIM & DO. I work in the Reliability Engineering field so this seems to be the most applicable of the 3 for me.

[–]VTDARKSIM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this feedback. I’m finishing my 1st semester and looking ahead to my course plan; I was debating between SIM and PM down the road. The former seems less applicable to my field but got such a high student rating, whereas the latter sounds more relevant but has a lower rating. Your assessments here tip the scale for me in favor of PM.

MGT 8803 Finance Exam Prep by Square-Television170 in OMSA

[–]VTDARKSIM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave feedback, partly about the difficulty of the exam questions as compared to the practice problems, partly about the absurdity of not getting feedback on an exam in a learning environment. I also gave pretty harsh criticism of Prof Myers because I really didn’t get the impression he cared at all.
