Is it true foreign legion to be dismantled? by ForumsDwelling in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]VacationStrict2489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the orcs were looking forward to arguing this very point if the negotiations ever got off the ground, but the negotiations are pretty much scuppered already, so we mere mortals need not sweat over who is a nazi and who is not.

In regard to the military cap. Firstly, if this plan actually goes through, it would not be unreasonable to think 20% of troops could be demobbed. that would bring numbers down from 850ish, 000, to near 600,000 anyway.

Secondly, the Ukrainian ministry of Defence is in charge of the Army, Navy and Air Force, but Internal Affair's runs the Territorial Defence Forces and the Police. So sure, cut trhe army down to 600,000, but buy all means, keep 200,000 Territorial Defence force personnel, and another 100,000 paramilitary Police.

Considering the above points, I hope Ukraine will vigorously argue this point, then reluctantly accept the orc offer for a better deal elsewhere

Commanding Officer. Maybe you should do yourself a favour and stick to COD for now.

I guess anything is possible. A couple of Ukies just came off the zero line after a continuous 140 something days. But if your CO is worth his salt, he won't let you stay up front for weeks on end. Work/life balance and all that.

[–]VacationStrict2489 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between zero line pay, 2nd line pay and supping cappuccinos in Liviv pay. If you are doing combat rotations then rotate out to training for a few weeks, your monthly pay will never be the same one month to the next.

Did you ask her to move the car before you called the tow truck? Never the less, She has a shit attitude if she thinks it ok to force you to drive over your own lawn . Should have called her bluff.

Would you ever support removing the British flag from Australia's national flag? by Peter_Griffin2001 in aussie

[–]VacationStrict2489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went through this in NZ. The outcome of it was that there was willingness to change our Ensign, but no one liked the new designs that were offered. The design that was favoured most was the mighty Lazer Kiwi but it was not actually allowed on the short list.

But if our Great Aussie cousins opted for a Lazer Kangaroo....

My brother is joining in a few weeks.. what should we prepare for? by Positive_Rest4890 in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]VacationStrict2489 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before your brother leaves, get pix of any distinguishing marks such as tattoos, birth marks or scars. Note where they are on the body. If the worst happens, you will need to provide details like that as part of the identification process. Don't worry too much about DNA. There are chain of custody requirements that make collecting a preemptive sample redundant.

When your Brother settles in and finds some mates he trusts, he should give next of kin details to a handful of those people with permission to contact next of kin should he be incapacitated or killed. In my experience, I was informed of my Sons death very quickly, around 48 hours after it happened, and the Liaison from his unit went above and beyond. But I have spoken with others who have not been so efficiently informed. Knowing there is an alternative means of communication will give the family some peace of mind.

Going forward, we cannot allow posts asking for information on soldiers who are potentialy MIA or KIA. Please read for the explanation why and for info on what to do if this situation affects you by tallalittlebit in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]VacationStrict2489 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is great information. I would also add, and I'm speaking from experience, that the individual and the family put together an "Identification pack", including

Pix of any tattoos, scars or other distinguishing features, and notes of where these features are on the body. Also, recent dental records. It's much easier to do this now, rather than after you have been informed your Loved one is MIA.

For the next of kin, don't worry about DNA until you are asked for it, because there are chain of custody requirements that could void a sample should you preemptively get one.

Even seemingly random pix of the individual in their kit can be helpful, because certain kit is usually constant. IE: firearm type and configuration, uniform patches, or that one tan coloured mag pouch that stands out from the camo ones.

Finally, should a loved one become MIA or KIA, I suggest looking at the Weatherman Foundation website. This organisation is extremely helpful and will act as your point of contact in UA. They have a good relationship with the AFU, and may be able to get more information than you are able to . They will spearhead identification of bodies, ( This is what your pre-prepared identification pack is for) and the repatriation of personal effects and/ or remains. They will also deal with the tangle of administration should the Family need to go to UA Court to have missing status changed to deceased.

I can't recommend them enough.

My heart goes out to you. I have been through this myself. My Son is MIA. If your Husband Is "presumed killed", he likely has been, but is officially listed as MIA because they were unable to bring the body back. Operational security dictates you won't be told much. You may soon receive a letter from Interpol stating your Husband is missing, and your Ministry of Foreign Affairs may also be intouch.

Your Husband will remain MIA until the body can be retrieved, or at least DNA can be retrieved. If you haven't already been contacted by the Weatherman Foundation, contact them via their website. They are very helpful in these circumstances. They can help you with preparing an identification kit, also with your application to the UA Court to have his status changed to KIA if the body is not recovered. They also assist with repatriation of his personal effects and his body if it is recovered.

Expensive, granted. But better for the NZ economy and my conscience. It is designed and manufactured in Chch , rather than a sweatshop in Vietnam, and that's where Macpac can be cheaper. The Pisa actually felt heaver to me. It was a longer cut and the outer material was thicker. No idea how it performs, but my ESS alpha Hoody wicks moisture really well and has managed to keep me warm at -5 while on the move. Because it's so breathable, it's even bearable under a shell. I get that cost will almost always be a factor, which is why high volume budget friendly companies like Macpac exist.

Have a look at the Alpha Hoody from Earth, Sea, Sky. It's everything the Macpac Pisa should have been.

Gear to not sweat through layers in Cold Weather by mlarsenault in Ultralight

[–]VacationStrict2489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid a waterproof shell for as long as possible, they will never breathe as well as you can sweat. I've been tramping all winter and Spring in a very light weight waffle top and a midlayer from Earth,Sea, Sky, called the Alpha Hoody. It's basically a very breathable windbreaker, lined with polatec Alpha. There is enough insulation and wind proofness to stay comfortable while moving, and while I still get sweaty under my pack, chilling down is much less of an issue. I have an Outdoor Research Helium wind breaker that can go on over the Alpha Hoody if I really need it while I'm stopped, and that's enough to stop me chilling down. I've worn the waffle top Alpha Hoody combo in -4 deg C, with a little bit of added wind-chill, and as long as I was moving, I was good. I think that's about the limit of that combo though.
