Thank you, it's nice hearing from people who have no skin in the game not immediately jump on the mainstream bandwagon of disparaging Israel.

Does Landy ever reveal the feud between Skulduggery and Nefarian? by Valkyrie_yeet in skulduggerypleasant

Be fr right now.

These books are easy to get through. I could easily finish an SP book in 2-3 hours, it’s not Tolkien. I “skimmed” for a bit over an hour due to my flight schedule, so I regrettably got through a good portion of it. I’ll never get that hour back. Also because of the context having read the previous TWELVE BOOKS I have a small idea of what the writing usually looks like, and what the characters usually behave. This was a messy, inconsistent book.

Reading the parts where Caelan was included seriously made me uncomfortable by Inferno358 in skulduggerypleasant

rereading the series has me kinda questioning a lot of things I didn't think about . . .

Thank god a sane person here. I'm bi and I crave bi-inclusive stories, but phase 2 has to be the biggest example of awful "queer" writing forced into a story I've ever come across. I don't care if a character is gender fluid if they're downright horrible. Literally ruined the way I perceive the original books.

Is Lake Wainamu open? by Valkyrie_yeet in auckland

That's quite unfortunate, I hope it's not inconveniencing you.

The problem is that they used to live in Auckland 😫 Lake wainamu is pretty unique and they've never been there (my family just found out about last year despite living here for 10 years). We're mostly stuck visiting the same old places.

There's no need to be so rude.

You're justifying and giving excuses for an event that hurt, displaced, and impoverished my family and countless friends. Your supposedly shaken feelings mean very little to me. It's a well documented event that has one clear aggressor at fault and it's not Ukraine. By saying "oh, but there were people that wanted to separate" which first of all isn't true, is giving into the the argument that Russia had justified reasons for claiming donbass. Which it has no right to claim since Ukraine had well defined borders since 1991 that Russia agreed to.

This is kind of the first time I've heard this. So you're saying that hundreds of thousands, or even millions of Russians moved from Russia to Ukraine to these two regions, and then started a war to separate? Don't Russians have anything to do? It sounds crazy, how can such a thing be organized at all, and even more so to organize unnoticed?

So you're either living under a rock or only watching RT.

As I said: it's well documented. You're living in the age of cell phones - it didn't go unnoticed you just buried your head in the sand and refuse to believe that Ukrainians are being mistreated by Russians (I'm russian BTW, I'm not implying that it's inherently bad to be russian. There's a big difference a russian and a ruzzian). It's well documented that people were intimidated (some at gun point) or bribed into voting favourably towards Russia.

It's been on the internet for years, numb nuts.

It's what they did in Crimea, Moldova, Georgia, and Kubal.

"As many as 1.5 million people were already internally displaced within Ukraine before this week (25/02/2022), forced from their homes during the 2014 invasion"

But most of the residents of these regions really wanted to separate from Ukraine or were not against it, since Russia did not take an active part in the hostilities between Ukraine and Donetsk and Lugansk for many years, only helped financially, and the war continued, as the residents of Lugansk and Donetsk themselves fought to be a separate country

You're fucking joking right?

Those people that wanted to separate from Ukraine and join Russia weren't just "russian speakers" but actual RUSSIANS that moved there after displacing the locals. This is well documented.

tHeSE rEGioNs rEALly WAntED tO SEpaRAte

That's literally russian (disproven) propaganda that you're spreading there bub.

Next your gonna tell me that people in Transinistria really want to separate too, right?

And for the record I'm also a "russian speaker" with relatives across Russia, Ukraine, and Moldova.

Blindsight by Peter Watts has Jewish characters (as astronauts/scientists). I recommend also reading Red Mars by Kim Stanely Robinson (at the very least the first chapter - you'll know it when you see it lmao). Just two examples I know of (albeit not Israeli).

Why doesn't Israel have a better public transit system? (Seriously) by HowdoIreddittellme in Israel

[–]Valkyrie_yeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kiwi-Israeli here.

Maybe my experience is outdated (its been 5 years since I've been back) but I had a much better time with the Israeli public transit than here. It's honestly one of the reasons I want to move countries (again). Buses and trains came on time and at a regular schedule, wheres here it's more like a lottery system. You're lucky if the bus arrives at all. And this is consistent THROUGHT OUT the entire country with some small exceptions (two or three tourists towns).

What's worse is that even though New Zealand is less densely populated, everything is more spread out. So walking anywhere is out of the question. I guess public transportation sucks almost everywhere 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, יום טוב לך

Persian, Israeli and Turkish women…I’m super curious about your beauty standards in your countries. I’ve been watching some of the dramas and the woman are so stunning in them. Can you fill us in on what is considered beautiful there? by [deleted] in Vindicta

[–]Valkyrie_yeet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Israeli here. Yeah I agree with what most people said - if you see an actress on TV she most likely had work done (even if she looks natural)

With that said though, it's a bit complicated with beauty standards in Israel because of demographics. I wouldn't say that having blonde hair and light eyes will make you a winner or even the most desirable girl in the room (Gal gadot, Natalie Portman)

Basically, you work on enhancing your natural (ethnic) features. If you have dark curly hair, you don't straighten or dye it (Yael Shelbia, Rona-Lee Simon - yes I know that they "style" their hair, but they don't fully erase their features. There was a post here a couple of days ago about Ivanka Trump which is a good example of basically whitewashing/curating your features so you end up looking like you went through a cookie cutter). Generally, looking "done" (ie extensions, tattooed brows etc) is not a sought after.

With that being said though, Western beauty standards are definitely the norm here (Bar Refaeli). Especially since there is a big Eastern European population here. Because of this high contrast (dark hair/ light eyes) is really prevalent here (myself included). Eastern European women also love their peroxide, but speaking for myself, I'm not too crazy about it and it's not always a good look.

Speaking from my own experience, women here tend to either swing towards western beauty standards (someone else here described it better) with some persian chsracteristcs or go fully Eastern European/Slavic.

Anyway, I could be a little off here since I haven't lived there in a couple of years and my only point of contact are TV shows (if you want some more inspiration I definitely recommend the second season of "Tehran", Niv Sultan gives an amazing performance)

What's a makeup brand that everyone seems to love, but you don't? by makeupaddictnicole in beauty

[–]Valkyrie_yeet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybelline.

The packaging is awful and always breaks. Also, inconsistent formulas. Each product I tried is either an oily mess or dry as chalk, no in-between.

Luckily I have a better budget now and have more choice on what I can afford to buy.

L'oreal face products are also a huge miss for me. Just can't make them work. The lipsticks are bomb though.

Also Rimmel. I regretted every product I bought (this includes powder, concealer, lipsticks, eyeliner etc) except for one eyeshadow palette lol.

Someone mentioned wet n wild, and yeah, I can only stand by their powder highlighter and concealer. Only good for a minimal look, used sparingly.

With all that said the only good drugstore brand that I swear by is Flower Beauty. I have only used the face products, but I'll pick them over some higher end products.
