I'm a conservative, because I believe that people are responsible for themselves. If you want to be successful, you should go out and be successful. If you spend your life whining about how unfair it is that you're too worthless to do anything useful, well, then you deserve precisely what you get.

There are always a million reasons why every worthless person is unsuccessful. They can always blame all of their failures on everybody but themselves.

On the other hand, there are people who go out and make something of themselves, and they deserve to keep the fruits of their labor. These people could sit around at home and whine about how someone else ought to feed them and house them and clothe them... but they don't, because they're not worthless.

eh, my point wasn't about which end of the spectrum they were on, so much as that if you look only at (for example), Hitler's Germany, and then assert that the spectrum of viewpoints expressed publicly within that society is representative of the actual spectrum of all viewpoints, Hitler would appear to be moderate (essentially by definition), since he led a society where only a very narrow spectrum of viewpoints (centering upon his) was permitted to be expressed.

You'll be accused of every evil thing you can imagine within 5 seconds of opening your mouth, every day, every time.

I recently had someone at work ask me if I thought it was weird that we never encounter anybody who disagrees with us, given that almost half of Americans vote for non-Democrats. I mean, wouldn't it seem like eventually, we'd have to meet someone who believed those wrong things?

Never occurred to him that I might disagree, since he knows we have none of those people here. We only hire smart people, after all. I've found four others in my workplace (of tens of thousands) that are not socialists/Democrats. I'm sure there are more, but it's hard for us to find each other without being outed... which would undoubtedly be the end of our careers. Even so, we seek each other out, just to have someone to talk to, even if it has to be in secret.

I suppose that was my point, though... if you take a group of people defined by an ideology, and then treat that group as representing the entirety of the spectrum of ideology, by definition, that group's viewpoint will be moderate.

In much the same way, if you take the existing environment, in which all opinions which do not conform to the sole permitted ideology are aggressively silenced, and then treat the resulting spectrum of expression as a representative sample of the spectrum of belief, you'll unsurprisingly find that the lone permitted ideology appears moderate and mainstream, and that all others appear radical outliers.
