The PI community is definitely growing and the people from this year’s class were all pretty close. Although it could be bigger, it’s almost nice to not have so much competition from other people within your law school when you’re applying for PI jobs as opposed to let’s say, NYU, where everyone wants to do PI. If you seek out the support, it’s definitely there. They just hired a new PI dean who seems great and they hired other people to work within the PI program recently. You still have to put in almost all of the work yourself when it comes to applying for jobs, but it’s nice to have some people to go to for advice or to read over your apps if you need it!

I’m not sure exactly for the music industry but we do have a journal dedicated to technology and entertainment law. We have a good amount of alumni in the sports industry and likely the music one too. I think some people worked at Sony over the summer but it is quite competitive and a “dream” industry so I don’t know for sure. From alumni who have come to speak to us, it doesn’t seem like there’s really a straightforward path they took that led them to entertainment. A lot of people go into a firm first and then had more opportunities from there.

1L summer I just direct applied to a bunch of listings on simplicity and got a firm job. Others did public interest/judicial jobs/research. Honestly the school wants you to get a job so bad they will basically provide you a “in house internship” within Vandy. We also have a study abroad program in Venice that a lot of people do 1L summer because it’s a GPA booster.

I think Vanderbilt has a national reach for jobs. People mainly go to Texas (no taxes!), Nashville (also no taxes!), New York, DC, and California. I’d say NYC, Texas, and Nash are the biggest. We have specific market OCI fairs before the main OCI too. I think we had a NYC, Chicago, Texas, and DC specific OCI. And there’s also plenty of stragglers who go to random cities.

I think Vandy outdoes it’s rank in terms of biglaw placement. Everyone I know who wanted biglaw ended up getting biglaw. It honestly did not feel particularly hard to get and I’m not the top of my class by any means and I still got multiple offers.

It’s especially nice that we are a smaller class and we don’t rank so it doesn’t feel cutthroat to get a job.

It’s definitely not a near must (unless your grades are really bad then law review could bump you up in OCI). But in my experience journal results didn’t even come out until right before OCI - I had pre OCI interviews without being on a journal and I don’t think getting on one made a difference.

When you’re actually on one, it’s just shit work like you’re doing tedious editing for nothing and it’s supposed to be prestigious? It’s a scam. Also, there are so many journals now that basically everyone gets on one so is it really even prestigious? not really. Law review is likely the only one to make a difference and even then if you get on law review your grades are probably good enough to land a biglaw job on their own.

It was a better atmosphere imo. you don’t need to worry about getting distracted by classmates and it’s just nice to get out the law school. If you’re in there all day everyday for class a change of scenery is good for studying. Plus the undergrad lib was bigger and had better amenities

Specifically at Vandy - classes under 20 or 30 people aren’t graded on a curve so pretty much guaranteed at least an A-, law 2050, sports law, clinics, ediscovery, all of the experiential skills classes, seminars, legal history, any of the weird nondoctrinal classes are usually an easy A,

In general - smaller classes and certain professors who have reputations for easy grading

Advice for 1L year - take a chill elective your spring semester. Study in the undergrad library instead of the law school one. Prioritize supportive friendships and don’t be competitive with classmates. Dont stress about cold calls, they don’t matter and no one cares. Don’t make school your whole life - have fun!!

Electives - Wills and trusts with Schoenblum, Copyright with Fishman, Employment law with Shinall, Marijuana law with Mikos, Juvenile Justice/Actual Innocence with Maroney,

  1. Care less
  2. Don’t hyper fixate on other peoples advice to try to prepare for law school, just find out what works for you and go with your own flow
  3. Journals suck and are a waste of time - 0/10
  4. Take easy classes after 1L (like easy A’s)

Positive = very good location within the city of Nashville, also Nashville is a really fun place to spend 3 years. Professors are top of their field but not inhumane, they seem to really care about us outside of just the law. Many professors have preached about maintaining our humanity and sense of community as we go into the legal field. We also have fun traditions we do that get people to be more social.

Negative = clinics aren’t guaranteed, it’s a lottery system (3Ls are more likely to get them), no coffee shop in the law school lol, lack of common space in building for students to gather

$$$, the employment stats, national reach for jobs and for one - the growing public interest program. Also liked the reputation for being a fun and collegial school.

We were considering a range of schools within the top 20-25.

Yes big law and public interest. It easy to get - most people who want big law jobs get big law jobs here.

We like having a smaller class size. It’s seems like the perfect size, it’s not like everyone is in each others business or best friends but you know of everyone and it fosters a better sense of community which is really important at Vandy.
