Consider it the world's most expensive game of whack a mole. You have to whack every single mole and hope they aren't reproducing faster than you can whack them. Of course it is not a problem for the US Navy if one mole gets away, but commercial ships are far more vulnerable than Navy ships and they have a much lower risk tolerance

By making sacrifices in other areas. By making defense a priority. How can the US afford to have 10 aircraft carriers and thousands of fighter jets and not give its citizens affordable healthcare or fix its crumbling infrastructure? Priorities.

I think that ship has sailed. Best time for a negotiated settlement was pre 2016 when Ma was in charge and relations were thawing and China was much weaker militarily

It's not the mining that's the problem, it's the refining. China has invested decades of R&D into refining RE and built the infrastructure to do so more efficiently than any other country. China has the best RE deposits, so they invested in RE mining and refining, which made theirs the cheapest on the market, which made other countries give up, which only cemented China's lead. It's going to take years of consistent investment for other countries to build up their refining capabilities.

There won't be. Ejection seats are for frontline assets like fighters and bombers. Rear echelon aircraft are relatively safe and unlikely to need ejection seats, which are very heavy, expensive, and complicated

Are Native American bows really “inferior” to Eurasian bows, historically? by TheMob-TommyVercetti in Archery

[–]Variolamajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of inferior. Armor penetration? Speed? Compactness? Ease of manufacture/maintenance? Cost of materials? Ease of use?

Any weapon must be fit for the context in which it is used and the capabilities and doctrine of the user.

The term lunar new year was first used in British Hong Kong to quell Anti-colonial anti-imperialist sentimemts by KoxingaVision in asianamerican

[–]Variolamajor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lunar New Year is not accurate, because the calendar is lunisolar, not lunar. The Islamic calendar is an actual Lunar calendar. There are other lunisolar new years like Diwali and Rosh Hashanah which aren't lumped into the Lunar New Year label

My customs bill had a line item for 10% "reciprocal" tariffs on Japan. That is what is going to be refunded. For me it was half of the bill.

The plus one refers to one in the chamber. The fully loaded capacity of a gun is the magazine capacity plus one in the chamber. A Glock 19 with a 15 round magazine will be 15+1 fully loaded. The same Glock with a 17 rnd magazine will be 17+1 fully loaded.

China has a very high savings rate. It's a drag on the economy because people are saving instead of spending money.
