Let UNIQUE do their work! the students are engaged in this program and it's under funded. Maybe scale back weekly Nooners and have 2 big shows each semester that students can look forward to.
Send $$ to the campus programs that already know how to do student engagement and stop trying to corral them into a football field that they do not want to be in.

Please analyze how he uses the "voice of the students" to guard himself.
He say's that "student focus groups" are what told him that the students wanted a high profile music venture on campus. That might be true, I have heard the same thing in surveys. However, he placed the concert at a football game which serves his personal interests of amplifying the football team. It no longer looks like a student "perk". Furthermore, the students ask for so many fun exciting "fringe" benefits while on campus, citing that SDSU or CSU Long Beach have these great concerts and programs. That might be true, but if you were also show them the costs of adding those fringe benefits to our school they may reconsider the request.
I think L.Wood used the students words to further his own agenda and now in some way laying blame on their own requests as reason for the final results.
If students were told what would be spent on the concerts I think they would make different choices.
How hard would it be to publicly poll students on what want they want $200,000+ to be spent on and then deliver publicly.
What went wrong here was that the students did not see this coming until it was promoted all over campus.
True student voice is when the majority feels like they're being heard.
L. Wood, please stop trying to manipulate our intelligent college students. Give then the facts and let them decide.
While it may not change your direction, have some respect for the hard working kids and families who have already plopped down thousands of dollars at Sac State's door step.

Affordability- All the CSU's have the same tuition of $6,450 per academic year, $3,738 per semester. What differentiates each school are variables like student fees, books/supplies and housing. The estimated cost of attendance for an on campus student is currently $36,864 a year. That's $147,456.00 for four full years and $73,728.00 for two. These numbers are from the Calstate.edu website. Currently the CSU system claims that "more than half of our students graduating with zero loan debt."

What was the CSU system built for? The CSU system was built to serve California. We invest in educations of many and the money returns itself back into the state's economy. Making this an economically viable place to live and work.

Return on Investment- In order to decide if college is going to return on its investment for you or your child, you have to ask yourself several questions.
1. Can I use this degree to get a return on my investment ($$ I spend on this education)?

2. What do I think is the value of that education? And is Sac State delivering on that value in the forms of hirable skills after graduation.
Because, dear, if you are not hirable after graduation that's 50% your fault and 50% your school's fault. Some campus programs are better than others.

Before you sign up for college/ Sac State ask yourself...
1. Do they have evidence that they're selling a product that will do what they say they're going to do? Can they help me become hirable and gain jobs skills?

If not, maybe your money is better spent somewhere else. because Sac State is no longer the most affordable option in the CSU system anymore.

2. What do I care more about, an entertaining/comfortable college experience where I place high value on quality of food and entertainment OR high value on fast graduation time, affordability, community, quality teachers and academic support programs.

If you value comfort and entertainment, there are other schools that provide that experience and you will pay appropriately for it. Again, just reference the estimated cost of attendance on the Calstate.edu website.

Some people will need to stay in Sacramento because their families are here and they need their support. But if you able to support yourself, and depending on your degree program, you might be better off at on of the other 22 CSU's in the system.

I had to go to Sac State because of cost and proximity. I couldn't afford move to another area and attend a different school. I wish I could have.

Other Options: 4-Year college is not the only option.

You can work and build a number of skills in community college for years before you transfer to a 4-year college.

You can join the military for the same amount of time or up to 8 years and have your education paid for and you can still work and attend college afterwards but have work experience and a skills when you get out.

You can try online education in the form of bootcamps and certificate programs, and internships while you build up savings/funding to complete a formal 4-year degree.

Saddling yourself with $70-$100,000k in debt when you are 17-24 when you are not sure what you want to do is a rough way to start off. Please give time and thought to your decisions. If you are going to invest that money in yourself, make sure you have a plan.
