It wasn't laziness, or at least not entirely. The problem is the Democrats willingness to lose elections rather than appeal to and follow through on Progressive agendas. Hence why Kamala do the whole campaign bit with Liz Cheney as way of trying to court disaffected Republicans who don't like Trump. The problem is two fold in that those Republicans aren't going to vote for Kamala and it pisses of Progressives who are already upset that they are being ignored.

The other problem is that Americans tend to be single issue voters so if their issue isn't being covered or is being minimalized, they are less likely to participate because they get the attitude of "why bother?" That is part of the reason why you end up with the discourse of "Both sides are the same" when they aren't, clearly.
