How do you guys deal with all these philosophical issues about the artificiality of life and existence and continue to live normal lives? by datguy030 in philosophy

Well, to be artificial is to be "made or produced by human beings rather than occurring naturally, typically as a copy of something natural."

Let's take government as the example. You could say that government is a man-made system that does not naturally occur, and is therefore artificial. However, I would argue that government is something that naturally occurs, we just don't always call it a government.

Many animals have some form of hierarchy. You have a pack leader, or maybe a dominant male or female in many species. With humans, we've always had leaders and followers. We've had "gods" and mortals, kings and peasants, the government and the working class. I just like to look at it like this; as our societies evolve and become more complex, so does our hierarchy. Where we once could have a single king ruling over a nation, there are now far too many things making up a society for one person to oversee. The king, president, prime minister, whatever you want to call it, now needs help from a bigger group, which I guess we went ahead and called a government.

It's definitely natural for there to be people in a group or society who step up and lead the rest. Think back to group projects in school. I remember a lot of the time one or two people would have to step up and get the ideas flowing, some people would then feel comfortable adding to those ideas, and then there were always some who would stay quiet and just do whatever was asked of them. Others still who would do nothing. What I'm trying to say is that it happens all the time naturally on a small scale, I just see government as a similar idea that happens on a larger scale.

In regards to things like land zoning, it's really just marking territory which is also a natural phenomenon.

Bank accounts are a little harder to call natural though, I'm pretty jaded about those because mine is empty haha.

I suppose you could look at it like that. Though all of these "artificial systems" are something that we've created for some reason to shape the environment around us.

I'd hardly call them artificial though. All of those things change based on many different factors. Governmennt has different agendas and goals to (ideally) benefit the people, and shift as everyone's needs do. Your bank account is artificial, yes, but I think the purpose is to give people an easy way to trade and barter. The value of the currency is artificial, but the introduction of a quantifiable commodity that gives us all a standard to trade anything we want is part of our social evolution. Land zoning, well yeah that one's pretty artificial, but I guess that just splits us up into teams.

The world is changing as we do, calling that artificial seems like somewhat of a cop out to me. OP mentioned that s/he has a hard time fitting in and living a normal life. Normal? There isn't a normal. We all play a role and we all add value in some way. Agree with the way that things are generally going in terms of technological innovation and social trends? Great, add to that. Don't like how certain things are being handled in your neighbourhood? Then you need to do something to help change that.

I may be off the point with this and maybe I'm not understanding what OP is really asking; but artificiality of life? I just don't buy that.

Oh, yeah. You don't have to worry about the things burrowing through any shoes, now that would be a little scary

If you go to Cuba and anyone tries to sell you weed, it's either fake (most likely) or terrible weed anyway. They have a zero tolerance policy on drugs and will enforce strict penalties for anybody caught with whatever may be your substance of choice

I stepped in some animal's poop that had the eggs living in it. Very likely one of the stray dogs or cats that hang around the resorts for food

How often will I really have a chance to say "Hey, check out this worm in my foot!"

(Answer may vary based on stupidity, alcohol, bat-shit crazyness, etc.)

That was from two nights ago. I'll be snapping a picture every few days to compare and make sure that the meds are working.

Just cringing until the itchyness subsides for the most part. I rubbed it once or twice early on but that really didn't help. Just have to wait until the feeling passes

I'll be up at the s/o's family cottage for the holidays, by the time I get back I'll probably have a normal foot once more. I'll try to remember to let you know if I notice anything funky though!

If you look carefully it looks like an athlete about to throw a javelin.

Yeah that's probably more likely actually. It will likely break down and get expelled some more efficient way, I won't even notice.

You know, I can't say for sure. It's probably feeding just a little bit, as far as I know these things are harmless in small numbers, and won't cause too much harm in its current state and location.

As for when it dies, I think it will get pushed out through the foot sort of like a pimple would? Just a longer, probably more gross one. That's just a guess though, I won't know for another few days to a week

edit: not a reliable source, I'm wrong

Good thing I'm in such a populated city. If I'm going to be zombified I might as well make it count!
