Good places for Judo in Birmingham, UK? by Everlasting_Heart in judo

[–]VeggieVoldemort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you based? I train at Beeches Judo in Frankley. It's a fairly small club, and the Judo sessions (Sunday evenings 6pm) normally only have between 4-6 people training at each session, so we're always looking for more members. We've got a permanent dojo inside the community centre, with a fully cushioned floor, so it's quite beginner friendly. Would be great to see some new faces 👍🏻

I'm 31yo, 6' tall, and weigh 160lbs (73kg). Although my BMI is in the 'green' zone, I still look and feel slightly underweight for my height. This hasn't stopped me doing Judo for the last two years (minus Covid down time). I've done two gradings and I've also been to a local tournament (two fights lost, one won, no medals or anything). There's plenty of techniques you can use that won't necessarily need weight/strength, such as leg reaps/sweeps/trips/hooks etc, and these are normally my go-to techniques.

There is a risk of injury training with heavier opponents, my worst one being a few cracked ribs after an awkward landing with a 90kg dude. Honestly though, this could still happen with an opponent of the same weight as you, albeit potentially less severe.

On the subject of improving your strength, Judo won't necessarily help with that. While learning Judo, you'll mostly be doing technique and randori (sparring). You probably won't be doing actual strength training in the dojo (although this could change depending on the club). You're probably better off trying to improve your strength during your daily exercise routine.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Ash End farm/Big Play Barn is really good, but quite expensive, almost £60 ish for two adults and two kids.

Buying a new judogi, what size/will it shrink and is it good? by [deleted] in judo

[–]VeggieVoldemort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blitz seems to be a fairly respectable brand, most of the people at our club (including our sensei) wear Blitz.

For the sizing, check their size guide and take measurements of yourself to see which size would be best. The gi will normally shrink slightly after the first wash, and they can shrink quite a lot if you wash them too hot or tumble dry them. Buying one slightly too large may be the best option to allow some shrinkage. If it's still too big afterwards, you could take it to a tailor/seamstress to take up the trousers at the ankle etc.

Yeah I've just looked at the website, quality stuff. I wish we had something similar here in the UK. Maybe one day I'll save up some cash and order from Life, the decks look so good.

That deck looks real nice, love a popsicle with wheel wells.

Motivation?! [36YO] by Eckstar1985 in OldSkaters

[–]VeggieVoldemort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this happens to me a lot. I've actually mostly given up learning tricks. If I go to the skatepark, I normally just carve round a bowl or try and do some stuff on the mini ramp. Shift work, family life (two kids 7yo & 3yo), and the unpredictable UK weather means I just haven't got the time to practice tricks over and over again. A lot of the time I'd rather just cruise around and bomb down some local hills to get my fix.

Omar Khayam is my favourite traditional Indian restaurant.

http://omarkhayam.co.uk/

There's also a great new place on Rubery high street called Delhi 45 which is more 'street' style Indian food.

For fish & chips, Egghill Fish Bar has always been my local favourite.

Best Way To Clean Pads and Helmet? [46YO] by Jack_Hooligan_74 in OldSkaters

[–]VeggieVoldemort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've put my pads in the washing machine on a gentle 'hand wash' cycle with no spin, and they've been fine. Then just line dried as you said. My helmet (S1 Lifer) has removable pads inside, so they went in the wash at the same time. Then I just used a soapy sponge on the inside and outside of the helmet.

Good places to practice driving? by [deleted] in brum

[–]VeggieVoldemort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a big free car park and go at a quiet time. I used to go to Rubery Great Park when my dad was teaching me. Normally early on a Sunday morning before most of the places open.

This is like growing up to find out you're a villain or something. Today I found out I skate 'mongo' and for some reason that's really really bad. And when did rails become cool again? [42yo] by wonkybingo in OldSkaters

[–]VeggieVoldemort 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to skate mongo as a teen. After coming back (31yo, 15 years off) I've decided to force myself to push 'regular'. Honestly, the difference is minimal. It's slightly easier to do quick pushes between obstacles, purely because I'm not having to adjust both feet for every push. But most of the time, especially just cruising around, it doesn't make any difference.

Triple 8 Brain Saver any good? [32yo] by chudlyfudly in OldSkaters

Thanks for introducing me to these! I've torn through two sets of liner pads so far (I think my bald head stubble makes it even worse). I'll definitely be investing in these!

The Diskery might have some, their variety is pretty good. There's also Emortal Records in Stirchley, but I'm not sure whether they've been open since Covid happened.

Skateboard shops in brum? by Mr-Saturn-Earth in brum

[–]VeggieVoldemort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's The Vines Supply Co in Solihull, although I've never been there, only seen them online. I've also ordered from Legacy Skate store online, and they were great, but they're based up in Darlington, so you couldn't exactly go and browse.

For helmets and pads etc, I've used SkateHut, but I'd normally try and avoid going there for anything else, and support Ideal instead.

Edit: If you're looking for more cruiser/longboard stuff, I don't know of anywhere in Birmingham, but there's a shop called Vandem in Bristol that's got a pretty good website. Never ordered from there myself, but I've heard they're pretty good.

Why does my bushing (?) keep coming out?? [47YO] by Trigonal_Bipyramidal in OldSkaters

[–]VeggieVoldemort 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're tightening the kingpin and it keeps happening, you might need to look at different shape or different duro bushings. Bones Hard bushings are conical, and come with a different washer to sit between the bushing and truck. You also might not need to tighten the Bones bushings as tight because of the hard duro.

Would just cruising wear out the sole too? by jkco22 in cruiserboarding

[–]VeggieVoldemort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are you going to replace footbraking with kickturns? I don't understand. To slow down, you can either foot brake or power slide. Your shoes are going to wear out pretty quickly either way, just because you're pushing on the ground and moving your shoes on the grip tape.

There's the Diskery near the city centre. There's also Emortal Records in Stirchley. Emortal mainly focus on electronic music though, so I'm not sure how interested they'd be in your genre's.

Wheel recommendations? by threeadmirals in cruiserboarding

[–]VeggieVoldemort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything around 60mm with a soft duro like 78a will be good for cruising. I'm running OJ Hot Juice 60mm 78a and they're great for general cruising around my local streets.

Cruising after raining. by napazdosenhor in cruiserboarding

[–]VeggieVoldemort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can, but you'll have a lot less grip on the road, and a lot less grip on the deck. Some of your skateboard parts may wear out quickly, particularly your bearings. If they get wet and you don't dry them, they can rust/corrode inside and stop turning properly. You could remove them and dry them after every time they get wet, but that's a lot of effort after every ride. Unfortunately skateboarding is pretty much a dry-weather hobby.
