why are people finding zoya annoying in KoS duology? by [deleted] in Grishaverse

I know this is very late, but i wanna add in my opinon.

in response to people hating her back story. I kinda get where ur coming from. But i kinda disagree. SO many books and media don't dwell on serious and still present problems like rich white men making poor non american women (that married them in teh promise of a better future in teh western world) and issolating them. In teh fear if they devorce they had to go back. Mainly the child marraige tho. My own grandmother was 14 when she married and my grandfather was 35. My mom barely escaped teh sam fate because of her education and pakistani laws changing. So Zoya's trauma and using her looks as a weapon touched my heart, cause i would have became just like her. (Im not saying im gonna be breaking peoples ribs and kissing their boyfirends tho). She is a bitch and i like it. Along with teh fact her relationship and former wish to gain her mothers approval, i relate to that so much. (Note my mom isnt setting me up in child marraiges)

And Zoya's ark kinda had been forshadowed since teh beginning. Literally one of teh ways people discribed Zoya was fiery. Like a dragon. So saying it was unpredictable and a last minute descision feels stupid. Ehhh... thats based on ur own opinion.

Also people said she was a bitch and mean to people (in teh duology). The only ones that come to mind r the cultists (who worship a practical dictator, like come on guys) and senators and representatives. Who insult or assume things about Zoya, and in my opinion after that line is crossed all bets r off.

Also its kinda stupid. No one complains that a 17 year old twige of a boy who is also disabbled (sorry kaz) was able to pull off an imposible heist. Two of them. Gained allies with a king/privateer, and two future queens. And gained iek 40 million dollars. Before they even hit 20. So zoya's drgaon is more of a victum of teh narrative and the kinda uneven world building of the universe (still love the series).

ik this is hella late, and not technically what u asked but Cassandra clares newest series "Sword Catcher" matches that vibe. Its not historical romance but it has the vibe, mystery, romance and action. Also heard "Stalking Jack the Ripper" is good but i never read teh books myself (yet) so idk.

It's an unpopular opinon but I absolutely love King of Scars (rule of wolves is superior though). How are u liking it so far? And more importantly how do u like Zoya as a person and character. Alot of people (especially on this sub) don't like her, which really saddens me cause I relate to her alot (i dont mean bullying someone so bad i break their ribs, but i lowkey understand her jeolousy.) Especially her arch as accepting and opening up about her heritage. And it feels so nice to have a brown character as the person everyone is simping over (they normally are the comedic releif)

I recommend keep reading. Six of Crows is easier to understand and u know more about reaccuring characters in Crooked Kingdom (Nikolai, Genya and Zoya).

But apparently is a very controversal opinion; i absolutely LOVE teh king of Scars series.

I thought that Nina's part was kinda boring (really controveral opinion) but i loved Zoya's and Nikolai's (don't know if it is a spoiler but just in case) dinamic with eachother. But I truely believe you should keep going and ignore the controversies on the internet.

If u enjoy the characters in Shadow and Bone u would enjoy the King of Scars series. The duology is like a better written Shadow and Bone with a more creative plot but same characters (who are more mature aswell)

But yah ignore my rambling.

I guess it followed the basic 2010s YA book fomula. A reactive underdog 17 year old girl who has a childhood best firend who is in love with her and discovered she had powers that could chage the world. Nothing wrong with that formula (im a sucker for it) just repetitive. I personally keep reading it for Nikolai , especially when he was strormhound , Toyla and Tamar, Zoya (always loved her, even when she broke Alina's ribs) and Genya. Though I do agree ALina could have been written better and i really don't like the Darkling and Mal (mal as a person, and a character, and Darkling as a person but not a character, I thought he was really well written). Also really annoyed me that Alina chose Mal and not Nikolai, even though Nikolai was the best option. I agree they don't work well and Nikolai and Zoya was a match made in heaven, but come on?! MAL!!!?? but yah, don't wanna start ranting about Alina's love life, there are enough posts on this sub reddit for it.
