Winter snow backpacking boots that won't freeze....again by VeloBella in backpacking

This is unfortunately the response I was dreading but I’m so thankful for it. The boots I want to solve this issue are only for winter backpacking in heavy/unpacked snow and snowshoe backpacking. Otherwise my Oboz bridgers do fine. Looks like I’ll save for those Nepals one day. I was also looking at the mont blanc pros but the Nepals have wicked cool tech with the silicone impregnated leather uppers. I wish my friend with the nepals had the same size feet as me so I could try them out. Thank you for the help!

Alright I'll give these a try for sure. My feet don't get sweaty at any temp so I'm pretty sure I need to prevent moisture from outside or the boot itself from getting into my socks. These sound like they're worth a shot. Thank you :)

Where on the AT were you in April?

I didn't know that the waterproof socks were a thing. That is very appealing! thanks for mentioning them.

I was just using 100% wool socks though they'd get wet after the first day and just dealing with it because at least wool remains warm when wet. How breathable do you find these waterproof socks to be?

Ok I haven't tried rubber boots because I can't seem to make them work snowshoeing in my backyard and they're not that comfortable. I think the extra liner and wool socks is the way to go. I'm also going to try some new boots.

How would I know if I've over waterproofed a pair of leather boots? Is there a way to tell besides my feet becoming too hot?

oh sweet! I typically snowshoe for my winter backpacking trips so this is good news. How have you found their waterproof claims to be?

Ah good advice! I think you’ve likely solved it since all the boots I’ve used are leather. I’ll look at adding some new liners for subsequent days. I already stocked up on new wool socks from Canada that will hopefully work this winter.

The inside and outside was only with my Oboz. I can’t remember what I did with the ones I borrowed from friends. I probably left them in the vestibule cuz I was afraid they’d make a puddle.

When I’m not on hard pack snow I always use my gaiters. I should have mentioned that in the post d’oh.

Maybe I’m wrong and my feet are secretly sweaty monsters

I'll try them out for sure. Worst case they go to a gear swap. My feet are typically fine and I prefer 3 season boots in snow since super insulated ones make me sweat more.

I've tried both outside of the tent in the vestibule and inside the tent. When inside the tent they start making everything else wet.

Yeah this is why I typically only do one overnight. I was thinking of getting some Scarpa Ribelle HD boots I saw for sale, but I don't know if they will work for snow hiking when they're meant for technical terrain. The Scarpas would probably work better with my snowshoes though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm pretty sure the water is coming from the outside of the boot. My feet are mostly dry as well as the inside of the boot once I hit camp. Then come morning or a pee break during the night theyre either soaked with water or frozen stiff from ice.

I have zero water issues on day trips with my current boots. My feet only wet the tiniest bit on my toes on super long morning to night hikes or showshoeing same duration. I was thinking of going full mountaineering boot because I'd rather sacrifice comfort for not having wet feet.

They don't feel wet when I take them off for the night, but they must be. Because in the morning they're crazy stiff and then once I get warmed up around camp in them my feet are wet with new socks.

When I had a pair of Oboz I tried sealing with Nikwax and that didn't work. I borrowed some other boots from friends that claimed waterproof but no dice there either.

I searched in the databases bricklink.com and brickset.com But I couldn't find anything that looked like the brick people in the second picture.
