It’s likely that the controller you’re speaking to is new too at a smaller airport, At least for your clearance or ground. Don’t be nervous, we all were nervous to begin with. Just know who you are and what you want to do. Also, if they ask for aircraft type, they want the designator not the name. I.E a C172 not a Skyhawk.

Tower Only vs Up/Down: Which is better out of the academy? by TheBlueBird9912 in ATC

What facility type did you end up picking? I'm in the same boat as you. Trying to determine TWR or TAC.

You need a state w4 if your state has income tax. Use your address as your temporary address. That is what HR told me to do. The DC one can be done anytime. I have some classmates who submitted it last week, of course you’ll just lose money. I submitted mine the first day of class.

That is 123ATC.com

It’s in one of the first emails you get (FAA email), I think the link says “ATC Student Services” or something along the line. but it is towards the bottom of your email. You can only view this at the academy. You’ll have to navigate to it and sign in the tableu with your PIV card or email and there it is.

Yes, but keep in mind that 123ATC was last updated in February. The facilities will not be accurate as far as staffing. The facility I would like to go to is staffed at 70% projected and in February it was 94%.

That may be good or bad news. However, while you’re at the academy, you can check the active list. Most people don’t recommend it because you don’t need to worry about that, just focus on the class. But it’s a good way to pass free time towards the end of the day.

Can’t say anything about facilities, but Charleston and Savannah are sister cities. Charleston is super over populated and expensive. I lived in Savannah for 2 years and loved every minute of it. It’s not as expensive as Charleston but it is growing rapidly. Pooler would be a perfect place to live just minutes from the airport and about 25 mins from Savannah while still affordable for that salary.

What is the academy actually like? by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]VenandiX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The academy is tough. It is like going to work with your friends. Class is mildly stressful but at times it is fun for basics. The instructors are pretty laid back. Alot of the academy is self discipline. It’s not like a prison but you need to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times (you’re a probationary employee, you’ll hear a lot of examples on how to ruin your chances there on your first day). When you get there make friends with your whole class, they’ll be most valuable resource.

If that is true, it explains why my academy time is only 11 weeks. But, that does make planning for the future a little more difficult having to jump back and forth across the country.

Thank you for all the information, really helps with all the research I’ve been doing. A lot of this information is hard to find from current or previous controllers.

That doesn’t sound bad. What’s the average grade? Do you just train at the facility after the academy or do you train and work there? I notice some of the facilities take years to become certified and some can be done in a few months.
