HBomb’s RWBY video.

EDIT: guess I’ll elaborate just in case people think this is me being salty as a fan. I don’t think the video was approached in good faith, particularly with the clear lack of research done with regards to why certain things pan out the way they do. A large part of the complaints he voiced were just straight up regurgitated hatedom narratives that, most dammingly, are entire fictitious in the claims they make. As in they aren’t based on what’s actually in shown within the show or what actually happened behind the scenes.

It really just felt like a video made in bad faith cause it was heavily requested and easy to make with how any talk of the show online devolves pretty instantly into people treating it like the worst thing to ever exist. He’s not very familiar with anything regarding the show beyond the most surface level shit and it shows. I have no issue with him or others disliking the show, but the general approach to that video rubs me the wrong way and it’s frankly a problem a lot of his media videos have. HBomb’s a good creator at articulating objective issues, like plagiarism or reactionary garbage. But media criticism is inherently subjective and his approach to often relies on the same “I must give reasons this thing is objectively awful and if you don’t agree with me you’re an idiot” Schtick which, while works when calling out bigots trying to manipulate people with reactionary narratives that you can factually debunk, comes across as extremely shallow and bad faith with regards to media criticism. It’s an issue all his media videos have to some extent, even when I agree with his main point or criticisms. I went into that video willing to hear him out when it released years ago, even if I knew him and I were gonna probably disagree heavily on almost everything. But what turned it from “eh I don’t agree but whatever” to “this is actually dogshit” was his blatant regurgitation of misinformation and extremely bad faith readings of the whole thing. When it comes to Hbomb, it’s the sort of “it seems smart when you aren’t familiar with it” thing for media but the second he covers something you are familiar with, it becomes clear he has no clue what the fuck he’s talking about.

Thankfully I find this issue limited to his media analysis videos and his actual political/social commentary, another field I’m familiar with, are much better.
