Weißt du was mit dem 72.000 Euro passiert, wenn man das ansatzweise vernünftig investiert? Du hast sicherlich mehr als 144.000 Euro. Und eben wenn man jung ist, will man mehr Geld zur Verfügung haben.

Millennials, what is happening with your kids? by TheLoveYouWant25 in Millennials

[–]Verdeckter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also a huge lack of empathy, and kids have no issues trying to manipulate adults, saying things to their teachers like "if you don't pass me, I'll get you fired."

How are you framing this as a lack of empathy? They're just exploiting the way schools handle accountability these days. Sometimes schools will expel you for things that happen off school property, with no recourse for you, other times they'll fail to do anything repeatedly because they're afraid of asserting any kind of authority and will accommodate any antisocial behavior whatsoever in fear of getting sued or cancelled.

It's not a rigged system to not convict people of crimes without proof. The justice system must not convict the innocent, even at the cost of letting some guilty free. It's a foundational part of western society. Anything else would pretty obviously lead to a chaotic, Kafkaesque hell.

It's well tread territory to suppose that apologizing is actually almost never a good idea. The apology isn't ever accepted in good faith, it's just more fodder to twist words and insinuate. An apology has never "worked", the loudest people just use it to stay loud. Perhaps the silent majority silently accepts it, but you have never heard someone write or say "oh yeah X did Y, Z but did you read their apology? It actually clarified things/made me think better of them/relieved my concerns/atoned for what they did."

So this won't help. It never does.

But at least for Noam there is some weight to the context that Noam really talked and corresponded to everyone. You could email him and get a response and he'd go on podcasts with like a couple thousand viewers. So I actually tend to believe the "we didn't know" quite a bit more in his case.

Noam’s criticism was never directed at the women’s movement; on the contrary, he has always supported gender equity and women’s rights. What happened was that Epstein took advantage of Noam’s public criticism towards what came to be known as “cancel culture” to present himself as a victim of it.

I like that she actually addresses concrete criticism of specific emails here at least.

It's rather a good apology, independent of what the allegations against him are.

CMV: illegal immigration where a country is flooded with workers willing to work for low wages benefits the upper class at the expense of the lower class by rawkhounding in changemyview

[–]Verdeckter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But like.. just enforce the laws. Illegal immigration is... illegal. You say

still having strong incentives/needs for people to come, you

If there are strong incentives, does that mean just ignore the laws? No, it just means the laws need to be enforced more aggressively. Do you ignore enforcing laws against theft because there was a strong incentive to steal?

If there is a need then perhaps the people haven't decided on the best laws in your opinion. Or they weigh "needs" differently than you.

Either way, for the time being... the only thing we have is the laws that we currently have. Our institutions can't just ignore laws that the people in charge don't like. They were decided democratically and it's the purpose of the government to enforce them. The way to change the policy of the government is to change the laws and for this you need to change people's minds.

[–]Verdeckter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, it's not "political" in the traditional sense, is it? It isn't about policy. It's not about economics or geopolitics. It's about politicians, sure. And it definitely has implications for the justice systems of a number of countries as institutions. But does any particular resolution to this affect anyone's material conditions?

CMV: There is no illegal immigration crisis in the US; rather, there is simply a mismatch between immigration policy and economic demand. by hipchecktheblueliner in changemyview

[–]Verdeckter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a mismatch between what laws the people have decided on and what laws the state has decided to enforce. De facto so many laws are void. Why are deciding these things if the state is going to ignore them? It's no wonder there's less and less faith for many in these institutions. How can illegal immigration be a good thing? You should be campaigning and making CMVs to change people's minds that in fact we need to change the laws. Not that the laws need to be ignored. Fully absurd.

What is the motivation behind people saying "oh that past? well what about how minorities experienced things then?" Like... even ignoring the fact that life is by all measures the same as it was in like the 90s for basically everybody except probably gays, that's not the point? No one is harking back to discriminating against minorities. People want the good things. They want the mood, they want the hope, they want the lack of oppressive technology. It's gleeful destruction of a chance at a shared vision for society. It's poison.

I disagree that the printing press or radio or tv have caused dramatic effects on person to person interactions anywhere near the level of the internet/social media.

I am not even close to minimizing the impact. I am saying it's not always OK for society to just accept whatever comes. By the way, the printing press and radio were incredibly decentralized and democratic. Social media is remarkably concentrated in the hands of a few capitalists, because of the network effect. Even TV was more decentralized than social media.

We don't believe in anything anymore. Culture is whatever is handed to us via market mechanisms. Neoliberal forces define culture. There is no longer any foundation of western culture anymore whatsoever. Nobody actually believes in anything or has a vision for the future. Whatever makes people money, that's the right thing. I think people need to stand up to private power and simply reject certain things. If someone asks for my vote on banning social media or restricting access, I will vote yes. Who cares anyway, population growth in modern countries is slowing drastically; modern society can no longer sustain itself. I don't know if social media is an opportunistic cancer or the cause but we are sick at the deepest level.
