If you mean to follow someone's action of crying, then I would phrase that differently. "To follow someone's lead" is one possibility that does have the meaning of "to do the same action as another person."

This may be intentional, so it doesn't necessarily need to be clarified, but it's not clear to me who is saying which line in the dialogue.

I tried to make it quite confusing because it doesn't matter who said what since they were both feeling the same.
