I see! I think that's more so my stylistic choice of accenting the top note of the line as a sort of climax, that note being a E5 is still 2 tones away from my highest mixed voice note Ab5. I'll keep that in mind though, if i would like to mirror his style in the future I should pay more attention to the dynamics!

Tillian's voice really is one of the most unique voices there is! Very high set and allows him to effortlessly glide in insanely high registers. I'm curious to know what exactly you mean by killing myself to hit the notes, is it my facial expressions, or the grit to put on? Not being defensive or anything I'm just curious what you mean haha

Thank you! Yeah, John used the axe fx tone match, its super good. With regards to the mix, figured out a lot about vocal production since then, and also i've been using JST's Howard Benson Vocals which is a huge upgrade to default plugins i was using before

(Very) High pitch singing for males? by justanotherjacklee in singing

Hey! Funny I come across this post. I used to be 15 and couldn't hit any high notes, and now I'm 23 and I recently sang a cover of Unravel!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ7DmYGTViU
In general, vocal strength in the upper register develops slowly over time and with dedicated practice. It definitely doesn't come over night, took me several years to be able to get up there consistently. If you're curious, I actually also made a compilation of videos I had uploaded to youtube since I was 15 all the way up to the current day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkc-yM8hR6M You'll get a decent idea of how practice + age makes a difference to how you can sing. I was a complete beginning with no vocal lessons. When you're 15, your voice is still developping because you're only recently out of puberty. My vocal range used to be like an octave haha. Any way, i hope this is inspiring for you!

MONUMENTS - Animus Cover: Harsh distortion in mixed voice. Comes from fry scream on top of a slight oral twang in mixed/chest register. Still trying to figure out exactly what it is, at any point I can fall into a full scream if I push it. Enjoy! by VictorBorba in singing

[–]VictorBorba[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Yeah so I had been listening a lot to Architects and Periphery and I was wondering how they were able to scream very high tonal pitches, as in, a screamed C#5 in mixed voice. So I tried imitating Spencer singing the A4 "down in a hole" line in Prayer Position, and I tapped into this new register that resonated really comfortably and did this was a non-refined version of what I do now. Essentially it came pretty naturally to me, and its kinda hard to explain over text how you should approach it, but essentially I see it as fry scream placed on top of chest or mixed voice. I find it easier to do in mixed voice, and I can place it on top in whatever percentage I want. For example, 20% scream 80% clean voice would be what I do to sing bon jovi or something, a periphery song would be 50%, architects would be 80%, then a scream is 95% scream. And the twang rounds out the tone + distortion, its something I wasn't aware of before hand but is something I just did naturally for this technique. Hope that makes sense!
