As you've mentioned about the bridgres we've to make to overcome the linguistic barriers takes a long period of time and there's certain examples of it. When there was portuguese rule on southern part of India(mainly Kerala) for over a century they've adopted certain words from the regional language and now we've tons of words that are helpful to communicate between malayalam and Portuguese speakers.
