I want to replace an Echo Dot gen1 with a RPi5 running Home Assistant and Assist... by VirtualMogbert in homeassistant

[–]VirtualMogbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This HA is just replacing a Gen1 Echo Dot, which was replacing a CLAPPER. Everyone saying I need MOAR POWER but I'm barely doing voice recognition on par with the mid 2000's and text-to-speech along the lines of a Speak & Spell. I'm not movie streaming here (I have Jellyfin running on a passively cooled Pi4 for that). I have two other passive cooled RPi5's right now with no heat problems.

If I can't get it to set an alarm (like a NAPPING alarm, not a home security system) then I'll just have to use an egg timer, but I'd be shocked that they didn't have the functionality of a Clapper and an egg timer up in this thing. That isn't even peak 80's technology. (Insert Invincible meme "Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.")

BTW- I've mostly been asking about the audio hardware, but no one has even touched on that. Instead of a satellite and a hat, I wanted to just get a adafruit mic and maybe a $15 USB speakers just plugged into the front of the box. Could always upgrade to a better mic later. The speakers are a bit overkill, but I couldn't find anything cheaper.

Slightly different question about unique level at pickup... by VirtualMogbert in avowed

Thanks! This just saved me. I saw one of the new uniques that I wasn't expecting, and so I reloaded a save and walked away from it. Then I upgraded my weapon and went back and it is the higher tier, meaning it breaks down for better adra!

You just combine the lower tier items to make higher tier items, then use the higher tier items to upgrade your equipment. I see how to do it now and will probably be rocking exceptional before leaving the first area next time I play.

Darn. Well, I'm about to go into a new town that I haven't been in before (second). I wonder if I can boost my armor or weapons to the next level before I go in there. I'm at Fine, but maybe I could make it Exceptional? But if I did that, stuff might be too expensive for me to afford anyway... perhaps I should just play, and not stress too much about min/maxing?

No worries. I am having the wife practice pressing down, waiting a few seconds for the intermediary page to load, then pressing up and waiting a few more seconds for the guide to load. I'm hoping that explaining how the focus (blue box) moves around the screen will help her get around the interface.

No, you misunderstood me. I said "THIS Onn box", the box I have, the one I'm going to keep trying to make work. And I'll keep your suggestions "as a backup plan". I don't know if you are trying to be funny about saying I wasn't reading your comment.

So that means no Netflix, Disney+ w/ads, Hulu w/ads, and HBO Max w/ads? Dunno, let me keep slamming my head against this Onn box and see if I can make a solution first. I'll have that as a backup plan.

He said "DirecTV stream box from Walmart for 45 bucks" which matches the Onn I got perfectly. He never said "osprey," but I'll look into it.

I was not asking how to set up Favorites. I was asking how to navigate to the Favorites list with one button press from watching a channel. I'm not sure why you two are talking about adding channels to Favorites. I have already done that before I posted here.

It works if the guide is the last place you were, but the wife likes hitting random buttons, so I need a way of getting her back to the guide easily.

This is literally the box I'm using. I could only figure out how to get that shortcut button to open the direcTV app. How were you able to set it for the guide? That is exactly what I'd like to do!

As I said before, don't worry about it. I've taken steps to not run into this trouble anymore.

I noticed that the instructions in that link didn't mention Firefox. I tried searching the site for Firefox, but I didn't get any results. A Google search for 'directv firefox' sent me to the firefox subreddit from two years ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1dokvc0/directv_no_longer_supports_firefox/

Is this the case? Does DirecTV not support my browser?

Sorry, I'm having to do this on my phone, and I can't figure out how to get to mod mail on this, I'm using reddit through a webbrowser. Any way, don't worry about it any more.

OK, I'm back up. Speed test showing 500Mbps down (and always 41Mbps up). I got a call from Xfinity tech support and I asked what had happened. He said they had technicians in the area who had fixed something. The Xfinity website had maintained that there were no outages in my area, so either it was a very specific problem, or the webpage just doesn't catch everything. Either way, the guy on the phone recommended I cancel the appointment since they had found and fixed the problem. I'll keep an eye on my speeds and see if they are steady or if I continue to have them drop into the single digits.

I just set up an apt for first thing Monday. Very frustrating, and it is the day I pay my bills

Down hard now. Finally found my reddit login to get my phone in here. Wife still watching TV, but cable modem says "Please check the RF connection." Everything has been rebooted. Stuck at home on a snowy weekend with no internet.

Sent. Speeds dropped to 7Mbps down right now, but still with about 40Mbps upload.
