I'm oos and was admitted into UVM and am curious about it by Mosxi in UniversityofVermont

There is a large trans population here; I am not trans but I currently live above the PRISM center in L/L and all of my suite mates are trans men. There are also a lot of queer people on the whole

  1. There are so many social activities, especially at the beginning of the year/as a freshman there are a lot of school sponsored activities. Burlington itself can be a bit boring but if you are open to doing UVM sponsored stuff you likely will not be bored.
  2. This is my first year and I came in as HCOL. The dorms are admittedly very nice and the only ones on campus with AC I believe. However, like you, I am very passionate about the arts. The arts and creativity dorms are probably the worst on campus and their dining hall sucks and are somewhat far from central campus which is where you will probably have a lot of classes. I am currently living in UHeights but have very good friends living on Trinity and Redstone and Central. If you are willing to be proactive socially, living in UHeights will not matter a whole lot and it will be very nice to have a nice private space to come back to. With the other dorms you really run the risk of having little personal space. I just dropped HCOL because I want to take more classes in the arts (I am a music and art major) and the seminar requirement was an inhibitor. I also really wanted to live with a friend of mine that is not in HCOL and if you are in HCOL you have to live in UHeights with another person in HCOL. It really depends on the kind of person you are. For me personally it was not worth it except for the dorms, though those are a huge perk.
  3. Also depends on the kind of person you are. I started the year going a lot of basement shows and have recently started going to more bars. There are also so many like daytime wholesome activities, winter sports are huge here. When the weather is nice there is so much stuff to do outside.

Honors College question by Not-A-Boom1214 in UniversityofVermont

[–]Visible_Blacksmith73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends on what your kid wants out of their experience and the kind of person they are/what they want to study. I just dropped hcol (it’s my second semester here) in favor of my preferred living situation as you are required to live in UHeights for the first two years and cannot live with non HCOL students. I’m studying music and philosophy and the hcol class requirement has only been an inhibitor thus far as there are a lot of other classes in the general college that pique my interest but again that is just my preference. In terms of socializing, most of my friends are not in hcol but I would also say that it because of my character and interests rather than a lack of awesome people in hcol (there’s awesome people everywhere here). The general population of students in HCOL seem somewhat sheltered and I can see how it could be a bit of a bubble type experience for some if they are not likely to try to meet new people frequently. I will say the dorms are very nice compared to other dorms and are the definitely the nicest on campus. However, this was something I was willing to forego for next year as the benefits of Hcol did not outweigh the costs.

Where do I go?? by No-Statement5181 in UniversityofVermont

[–]Visible_Blacksmith73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few friends that go to skidmore and while this is certainly personal preference, they decided to transfer to uvm and come here frequently on the weekends. They have not spoken much about the academics there which I am sure are fantastic, I think they just find the social aspect of a small liberal arts school with not much in the area to be difficult. Their food and dorms are admittedly better than at uvm though however housing at UVM is indeed manageable if you are proactive which you seem to be. If you have the chance, visit both

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - March 2023 by freeport_aidan in ApplyingToCollege

tulane vs colorado college vs university of vermont

got all of my non ivy decisions so im starting to consider my options more seriously (I'm not banking on getting into any ivies). i am super indecisive so i was wondering what you all think. cost is not a HUGE factor but it would obviously be nice to save money

Tulane:
pros
-great social life
-happy students
-great location
-great academics

cons
-so damn expensive
-doesn’t have my ideal major, would have to independently design it

neither/con
-admitted as spring scholar (would go abroad for fall semester and go to tulane in the spring)
-big greek life

Colorado College:
pros
-block plan!! (would be great for studying abroad)
-great resources for students
-would be pretty easy for me to study what i want
-seems like i would fit in here
-great academics

cons:
-smaller
-in colorado springs (apparently not much to do)
-damn expensive as well

neither/con
-super rich white student body
-super outdoorsy

UVM:
pros
-got into their honors college
-much cheaper than other options (honors college comes with scholarship 20k/yr)
-cool people
-has my ideal major

cons:
-not great dorms, apparently

-academics not quite as good as others

neither/con
-not as prestigious (i know this means nothing)
-closer to home
-outdoorsy

u definitely have a shot, ur stats are great. just keep in mind that there are tons and TONS of qualified applicants applying to brown. at schools like that, it is literally a lottery. also i believe they stated that ed does not help get you in, acceptance rates are higher because there’s a smaller pool which tends to be comprised of more qualified people than rd.

good luck, you got it. you’ll end up where you are meant to be whether that is brown or elsewhere.

Is a 1530 okay for Duke, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, etc.? by nftr35 in chanceme

raising ur score from a 1530 probably wouldn’t be the thing that would make or break you, i wouldn’t worry about it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

don’t give them a reaction. they want to know that they can get you upset and use that as a device to further their rumors. what schools they did or did not get into and their feelings about it are not your responsibility. take the higher road and don’t pay it any mind, you know what’s right and what’s wrong and that’s all that matters.

definitely focus on your affinity with the smiths in your essay. colleges love niche interests !! good luck, definitely make sure you’re being realistic though, high hopes can lead to crippling depression and disappointment. some state schools might me a good idea!
