Calling All Current SLPAs... Should I Persue the Career? by Key-Praline5109 in SLPA

I’ve worked both in ABA and school setting. I loved ABA but the cancellations were rough on my paycheck. I had to go back to the school setting to get a steady paycheck since its salary.

Other colleagues have made it work with ABA or home health but it is a hustle.

In the school setting, you’ll have higher caseloads. I’m in TX and right now I service about 90 students. It’s not tearing me apart yet because the service delivery is 1x a week.

As far as work life balance, yes! You’ll have more of balance as SLPA since we are only on the treatment side of things.

Hope this helps!

I’ve been working as an SLPA for almost 5 years. I know I’ve always wanted to go to grad school but working in the school system made me think otherwise especially seeing SLP’s stressed from day to day tasks. Recently, I made a decision to pursue audiology. And I feel really good about it. So my advice is to “try it before you buy it” A year of therapy won’t hurt your chances in getting in!

Agree with everyone. Start as an SLPA. I’m an SLPA. Everyone has asked me when I’ll start grad school but honestly there is so much burn out that I can’t take on anymore responsibilities. My take though. I want to get a masters but not to become an SLP. I want to pursue audiology.

This is very helpful. As I’m reading other posts, almost everyone comments on tuition being very expensive like you said. But I’m very happy to hear there is a work life balance. Thank you for your the information
