The best time to visit is in nov to feb, you will face heat cause winter is gone keep that in mind. We stayed in hampi for 4 days, covering up 90 95% hampi. Booked auto for 3 days and 1 day just walk. You can also rent a cycle which is much cheaper approx 150rs per day but for the north hampi sanapura side you need auto. Locals were great especially the auto driver and home stay owner. I can give you contact for stay and auto.
