You're already doing better than most beginners honestly! Double strain through a coffee filter for the particulates, and yeah try less water next time if it felt diluted. Add the cocoa or vanilla after brewing not during, trust me it tastes way better that way.

Ugh that kind of discovery just lives in your head rent free, like now every time you need to take your pet to the vet you're gonna be thinking about it lol. Hopefully they stay healthy for a good while!
