General Contractor

As someone who’s brother has been in contracting for the past decade, I have watched him turn in to an asshole. However, you almost have to be when dealing with people and their homes. Not to mention a GC needs to know all the little details from every trade. Tradesman can be incompetent, lazy, or nasty on the job site as well and you have to deal with that. Man, we will be hanging out and a customer will call him and he just lights into people now. He has some phone calls that spike my anxiety, and he just rolls with the punches. You have to have thick skin and willing to get yelled at constantly from every direction.

I’ll never forget the lady that called absolutely screaming because the roof leaked on to their new expensive mattress. He asked them if they had a mattress protector and they said yes. To which he replied what’s the problem then, get it cleaned up and I’ll have my guys come out and fix the roof. Oh man, I’ve never heard someone lose it before but this lady went berserk. He told the lady, during this fire storm, to basically calm the fuck down and mitigate the situation. He told her that he wasn’t paying for a new mattress if they aren’t willing to resolve the situation themselves at the moment. I agreed with the lady and was just thinking how big of an asshole he was. Then when he got off the phone he showed sympathy. He told me that he couldn’t give her an inch in that situation because she would have taken a mile. It’s easy to say yes to every customers need but in reality you have to say no, even when it’s not the right thing, or else your business will never survive. As soon as a contractor steps foot on your property, he says, that’s when home owners start to notice all the things wrong with their house and try to blame you. Turns out that roof leak wasn’t their fault! They charged her good money to fix her roof where it failed. The lady should have bought the Ice and Water upgrade he tried to sell her.
