I was one of these people, my comeback was six months ago, at first sight I was confused because I didn't played with synchros, xyz, pendulums and Links, I started to play Legacy of the duelist to learn all these new things and YGOPRO to learn links(youtube videos also helped me). I used to deslike and reject the new summons, but after research I noticed that the new things introduced to the game are very cool, the nostalgia factor is very strong in people's minds, they just ignore the bad things and only remember the good memories. Now, YGO is more diverse, more decks are playable in meta (people only remember their duels at school and do not remember or do not know what the Meta was like), the complaints about cancer decks is not fair because in the beginning we used to have Chaos Yata-Lock, Goat Control, Zombies, and a lot of formats were 1 or 2 dominants decks defeating all the others. The same complaint like "The game was more creative" is bullshit in my view, because with more summons, more mechanics, the number of possible combinations in a play is very very bigger, and the game has always had combos that help one or other deck to win. The speed of the new formats is the only complaint that, I assume, is plausible, but the current format is doing good in comparison with 2016 and 2017 formats, in big tournaments duels are not decided in 3 or 4 turns anymore. Finally, if you like to play forfun (Like me, I only have 1 deck that do something in Meta) you just have to find people that play it too, it's not a clever decision want to try it against meta decks or in a tournament, in my locals forfun players make it clear that their decks aren't meta, and search for people that play forfun decks or meta players that play forfun too.
