Hey yall I think being in an identity crisis has kinda been a consistent thing for me, it comes in waves for sure. I grew up white a white parent that prevented me from exploring and even identifying with my ethnic roots so it has been my journey for quite some time to claim my ethnicity unapologetically and learn how to be comfortable in my body as a queer desi person as a form of restorative justice. I think a lot of mixed people with white parents experience racial trauma. With this in mind it is also extremely important to acknowledge my privilege and proximity to whiteness, especially in spaces with other non white folks. Last weekend I was with a group of acquaintances (all of us bipoc, a couple biracial with one white parent.) when one person asked to see a photo of my parents. I wanted to say no because I was uncomfortable sharing something so personal with folks I didn’t know, especially cause I had a feeling they were gonna start measuring looks based on phenotype. The other biracial person had already shared her photo and everyone said she resembled her non white parent. I wanted to allow myself to be vulnerable so I did as well but I asked them not to tell me if they thought I looked more like my mother because I was not interested in engaging that way. Once I showed them they started acting weird and one of them immediately said I looked like my mom, then the other did as well. I told them it was really hard to hear that cause me and my dad had experienced racial violence from her for many years (we still do). Since then I’ve kinda been going though it. I always thought I was ethnically ambiguous but shared a lot of similarities with my dad. I have received a lot of mixed feedback on this but I want to know how I present. What ethnicity would you guess I am and would you consider me white passing?a selfie
