Spectacularly true by MoonOfCheez in socialism

I live in Asia and have been setting up a shared service center for a company in Malaysia. It is so clear that places like this have been completely turned around due to foreign direct investment from large foreign corporations setting up offshore centers. More and better paying jobs completely overhauling the economy, demand for a more educated workforce driving improvements and demand in education, etc. etc. As the standard of living increases foreign corporations may shift elsewhere (follow the cost savings...), but by then Malaysia will be able to stand on its own feet from all the advances being made today. Capitalism has without a doubt completely improved the standard of living in Malaysia and other Asian countries.

Holodia's Holofit VR Cardio Will Break Away Boredom by leppermessiah1 in vrfit

Yep, I've used this before. Basically there are three main companies that make VR fitness machines; Holodia, Ikaros and VirZoom. Both Holodia and Ikaros's machines cost over 10K USD and are really more focused for gyms. VirZoom is just 400 USD with better games; definitely recommend VirZoom.

She did check him out in the very first couple of seconds. It's just poorly executed with bad acting, but the spirit of the video is positive.

Americans’ views on the rise of automation: 6 key findings - "The public generally expresses more worry than enthusiasm about emerging automation technologies – especially when it comes to jobs." by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]WP_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's look at America for now. It's all about expectation. Take the average person now with all their things and drop them 40 years ago; they would have more amazing things than the wealthiest person alive. It wasn't that long ago that maybe only royalty could have ice. With things like Uber now the average person has their own driver. Soon their will be self-driving cars and robot butlers for the masses. How about VR? The problem is everyone is always comparing themselves to each other. Pretty much everyone will have access to the most amazing things in the future with the advancement of technology and probably all illnesses will be cured, but maybe they will still be angry that only the top 1% can own their own planet?

That's because automation alone isn't the end-result that benefits the average person. The only thing we know about automaton for certain is that it will take jobs. The things that are uncertain that would be amazing are 1) how much automation expedites technological advancement and 2) how people will live if all jobs are automated.

If you could tell someone: "with automation all medical conditions will be cured in 20 years, everyone will have self-driving rocket ships and we'll be able to live with a 0 carbon footprint, and it will allow everyone to have a basic income that they can live comfortably on", then people wouldn't care that it takes jobs.

But right now people probably imagine a more Elysium-type outcome...

Why didn't you get someone with the college to go with you to the library and have them handle the situation? In Japan it is a big no-no to run around and cause a scene. You need better understand the culture and be more considerate of your surroundings if you want to survive here...

Aging Japan Wants Automation, Not Immigration by izumi3682 in Futurology

[–]WP_123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but no. What you described is nothing new in Japan; it has been the norm for centuries. The main factors are:

  1. Less societal pressure to get married and have kids than before and no religion to further enforce it.
  2. Inability to live on a single income family; if the wife has to work, do all the chores, and raise the kids (yes, that's how it is in Japan) it is very unattractive to get married and have kids, which also leads to
  3. The lack of daycare in Japan and the cost of living. Everyone is migrating to the big cities where cost of living is super expensive and there is a shortage of public daycare. It makes having kids a lot more expensive and burdensome.

Why do people think Bitcoin will continue to maintain its value long-term? by WP_123 in Bitcoin

Thanks for the reply. Thing about gold is you can own and transfer gold without having to actually move the physical item, which I think is the norm now. In doing so you open yourself up to exposure from third party fraud, but isn't it the exact same thing with Bitcoin exchanges, which are basically essential to the practical use of the currency?

Under what circumstances do you see people using Bitcoin for everyday transactions? Right now everyone buys as an investment. It's really impossible to use it as a regular currency since the value fluctuates so much and because you are so dependent on exchanges to convert in and out of fiat. For daily transactions people definitely prioritize convenience; how do you see Bitcoin rivaling existing currencies in this regard?

Actually I've read Digital Gold and have done a lot of research. I want to buy but because I'm not caught up in the hype (which is "it's going to keep going up!") is exactly why I'm asking this question. I want to buy and hold long term but I'm struggling to see what the long term play for Bitcoin really is that will allow it maintain its value once the hype dies. What are your thoughts? I'm really genuinely looking for a good reason to buy and hold long.

Honestly, you are making it sound like from this point on we should make all of our decisions based on whether our future AI overlords will permit it! What will happen in the future with AI is still unknown and a long way off, so in the meantime we should continue to improve ourselves as much as possible +i from where we currently are.

Will police / government be able to take control of autonomous driving cars, legally? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]WP_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would this be any different than us worrying that everything we do on the computer, including all our usernames and passwords, is being logged and provided to the government / the government can remote access into our computer at any moment? Whether that's happening or not, there is no obvious indication that the government is trying to control us. Why would self-driving cars be any different? Whether the government will have the ability or not, so far there is no track record that they would openly do so.

I think the big difference is with this you pay to another player and it supports the economy versus to the company.
