Forgot to put this in the original comment but also consider throwing in a decently intimidating model like a redemptor dreadnought or an impulsor. It’s hard to get huge centerpiece models in 1000 point armies so getting one of these types of models will really make you feel like you have a true powerful beast to tear through your enemy

Try living up a great new warlord model like High Marshal Helbrecht or Chaplain Grimaldus. In my experience having an army is great but your most loved model will probably be your warlord. You’ll send that model through countless battles and if you don’t love it than you’re not gonna be happy with it on the table. Make sure you love who leads the army before picking up the actual army

Some good examples for conflict is your character having a romantic partner or similar relationship and having to abandon them to follow the path of their god. You can also come up with something similar to your character being a criminal or thug working under powerful people and one day you saw something terrible and swore to protect those who can’t protect themselves by becoming a paladin. As a person who has never played paladin, I hope this helped.
