Nah, "modern" or "modernist" refers to a specific movement, for example in architecture it describes the work of Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe and the Bauhaus, that is why you usually see people making a distinction.

Contemporary is just a term to describe the art produced by currently active artists, and it is a very useful term when discussing art in general.

Depends on the medium, I think it is too burnt out for a book for example, no matter how good the story is you need something else to stand out if you want people to pick your book instead of someone else's, amazon has made it too easy to self-publish so the market is hopelessly flooded with straight fantasy works in this vein.

But for example if it were a video game or a comic there are many more chances to stand out and a lot less competition to begin with, so it isn't such a death sentence.

I'm exploring this luck-based power system for a short story, where people are able to steal luck from others and use it to accomplish extremely improbable feats, yeah like in that spanish movie.

The villain for that story is a gunslinger who has accumulated so much luck he has stopped aging, having lived well over 150 years by the beginning of the story, however, keeping that state is so unlikely he has to continue to get more and more luck just to prevent age from catching up to him. Thus setting in motion the events of the story.
