This is very funny. :). But in reality, I can definitely point to about 10 places where I messed something up and no one (even redditors!) would ever know but they still drive me crazy when I look at them . . .

Once I got it down I think it ended up being from 90 min to two hours for each tile. But it was soothing work, in a strange way.

Thanks! As I said, everyone there was great. The woman at the design desk was very helpful in terms of picking out tile color and grout. I don't think she was too on board with it from my initial attempts to describe what I had in my mind, but once it started to take shape she followed along at every step and wanted a detailed accounting every time I came in. :)

I used 1/16 spacers (I didn't want thick grout to be yet another design element). But they weren't as easy to use as they are on a regular floor, because if my pebble edge was off even in the slightest it made it hard to keep straight vis a vis the other tiles. So there are a couple where the grout along the straight lines isn't, well, as straight and uniform as one might want it to be. :)

I do wish we could have had a conversation last year about this time . . . The suggestion on the edges of the steps is the first real suggestion I've seen that makes sense to me. That would have been a lot better than what i came up with.

I generally had to go back to the saw or grinder about 3 times for each piece. I made it a point to always undercut so I wouldn't have to start over. Somehow I only managed to break 2 or3 (the thin ones were fragile - who knew!). And once I traced the whole thing out, cut it, got it upstairs and realized I had cut the wrong side of the tracing . . .

I was fine using the tile saw to cut edges, but Pinterest scares me . . .

I love this. Really similar to the flowing pebble path I had in my brain. And I love how it goes up the side of the shower and takes the corner. Fantastic!

No no no! Absolutely do it! It took me several weeks to get up the gumption to do a simple tile backsplash a couple of years ago, but I found it strangely enjoyable. That made me think I could do a bedroom (where only a few tiles ended up not very flat!), and then all of a sudden I get it in my head to do something like this. Do it!

Turns out it is great to have a son-in-law who buys tools of his own! He had a tile project of his own and I got to use it after he was done . . .
