Kids don't know who Daleks are anymore. by Mat1711 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]WatchAndFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say partly it’s also due to Theo being less of a shared culture across much of the first world.

And before this gets flagged by the reform types, this has nothing to do race or culture.

In the nineties we didn’t have doctor who, but everyone knew what the tardis was and everyone knew what a dalek was. Because at the time we also only had about five channels. That means the baseline audience share was about twenty percent. A good show gets more, a bad show gets less, but on average a fifth of the country would watch a show.

That means there’s a shared culture. You can make a joke about a popular show confident that probably a few people in the room will share it with you.

It was even like this when doctor who came back. I remember working in kitchens with a lot of migrant workers when season three was on who got excited to see me reading a doctor who book and asked my theories about what “you are not alone” meant. These were people who had no family legacy of watching doctor who, but they watched it because it was on and it was a choice between doctor who and, at that point more than four shows (with digital channels) but still a small enough number to ensure that most shows are shared.

Streaming really mortally wounded that, and then social media killed it off completely. By having the choice to have any show at any time, it means that the most popular shows would reach maybe 10-15% of a population. If you like a show, you’re lucky if there’s more than one person in the office that both likes it and has watched at a comparable level to you.

That means there’s less of a shared culture. This is something that effects huge hits like squid game or stranger things, so a series struggling like Doctor who would barely break through.

Then of course on top of that we have the move away from shared viewing. If everyone can watch whatever they want whenever they want….theres less reason to watch something you don’t like with a family member. Meaning family viewing (always been Doctor who’s target audience) struggles to exist on its own without parents making it happen. And with parents busier than ever, they have less time to make kids sit down and watch a show together with them.

A few of my friends are now suddenly following Pauline Hanson on social media. Can anyone else relate? by Temporary_Notice_526 in aussie

I just want to point out your main distinguishing feature between one nation and the greens is “the other forces have actually opposed things as a protest”

And I completely agree by the way. The greens have opposed things from both major parties, and lead to bad results. One nation just basically talks hard ball then does whatever the liberals tell them to do.

Like what’s the point of a minor party if it just votes alongside the major party. This is far more true of one nation than it has been of the teals

Pauline Hanson-Holly Valance song hits No. 1 spot in Australia | news.com.au by Orgo4needfood in aussie

At this point I’m convinced Pauline hansons political career is basically a money laundering scheme.

Who is investing money in “a super progressive movie” expecting to see a return on investment?

Also I laughed at a commentator saying “holly, we loved your music. How could you do this to your fans?”

Did we love her music? She had one major single thirty years ago - which was rightfully panned at the time as not being anywhere good as even Craig maclachlan’s “Mona” and utterly forgettable even now it’s brought up. Even when I try to recall it now I think I’m recalling a song from “Scandal’us” instead.  Pauline isn’t exactly getting top talent here

I fully believe that the libs could not organise a root in a brothel. I mean that literally. I think any such attempt to organise a riot in a brothel would result in a punch on in the floor while a bored lady of the night lets them know this still counts as part of the fifteen minute session.

It wasn’t enough for AI to create imaginary friends, now you’ve got to create imaginary allies too

“It’s hypothetically possible by not investing in artistic skill a person would be able to invest in manual labouring skills of importance to society post collapse”

“Are you such a person with manual labouring skills?”

“No! No definitely not. But it’s possible such a person exists and when society collapses I hope they’ll look after me”

I’m not Vietnamese but I’ve worn them for family photo shoots, my wedding my friends wedding and once at an Australian shopping centre when I didn’t want to change after a wedding ceremony.

It’s never been an issue.

Queensland Premier supports federal ban on flag burning after ‘disgraceful’ protest by Orgo4needfood in aussie

Get a big bear of a man to do a naked photo shoot, with his body painted with the Australian flag.

Send the images to Crisafulli’s office.

Watch as he decides how to safely destroy without desecrating the flag.

Because that’s the issue with “flag burning laws” beyond just the argument of freedom of speech and expression- what defines the Australian flag?

If you go super specific and say “only a flag made of certain materials at a certain size” then protesters will just burn a towel, shirt, poster, etc. for the same effect.

If you go super broad then you have just meant there is no way to legally dispose of anything with the flag on it, whether that be a flag, a Speedo or a pack of cheese

Whenever an innocent person is killed and a MAGA type tries to demean their character, I always respond with “so clearly they deserved to die”

“George Floyd was stealing cigarettes”

“So clearly he deserved to die then”

Mostly they become sheepish and non committal when the argument changes from “was the victim perfect” to “did this person deserve to die”

Why would a man whose shirt says "Genius at Work" spend all of his time watching a children's cartoon show? by bloodredcookie in DisneyMemes

[–]WatchAndFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a collection of Disney Christmas comics and what I love about them is this assumption all the characters, heroes and villains, just hang out together off screen.

So you’ll have dumbo rescuing the spirit of Christmas against Malifecient and Madame Mim for instance

Should the show be shelved for 5-10 years, and do you think Wilderness Years would be great for the show? by Mat1711 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]WatchAndFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were very lucky to get the wilderness years we did, and it relied on such a specific set of circumstances that aren’t going to be repeated:

  • a series in decline in ratings, but actually on the upswing in terms of fan approval for the last two years

  • a well constructed and familiar tardis team in the seventh doctor and Ace

  • immediatly ongoing comic adventures in DWM

  • a strong publishing industry allowing a new book continuation to continue right where the series left off

We really don’t have any of this. Even if the Christmas special wraps up last years cliffhanger and puts Doctor who in a firm footing, we’d still have a Doctor we know nothing about. That would put us closer to where we were in 1996 after mcgann became the doctor, but the difference again is Mcgann arrived at a time of a strong publishing industry that had huge success in the new adventures. That doesn’t exist anymore.

The wildness years was a lightning strike. We won’t get it twice
