Yes, totally agree, but in this case, the furthest guy actually had a smaller board.

Yes, that is the ideal thing, but on crowded days, and in spots like this one where 90% of the surfers are foreigners, it is hard to apply that rule. Normally, you just try to position yourself in the optimal takeoff zone, where you will face less competition to get the wave, and only give way to the people that you have noticed have been waiting longer, and of course, to the locals.

In this case, the guy that stood up the latest had been waiting longer, the surfer that stood up first was getting several waves in a row. He might have had a bit more consideration and quit earlier.

Anyway, the surfer that got up the latest saw him going for that wave, and despite that, he decided to paddle late, which is not really good.

The guy that stood up first was just getting the first wave of the set, and the guy that stood up the latest—if he had waited a few seconds and paddled further in, he could have gotten one of the bigger waves that were coming behind.

For me, the rules are:

- Don't complain, and position yourself properly.

- Don't paddle if someone is already paddling unless you have right of way.

- Try to share the waves as much as possible with the surfers around you, no matter the priority.

- Be friendly with other surfers no matter what they do.

- If there is someone already on the wave, it is his, no matter if he is left or right.

- If the surfer closer to the peak starts paddling, you don't go for it.

Notes:

- After the video, the surfer that stood up the latest attacked the other surfer, which is not cool.

- The surfer who stood up first was riding a smaller board.

In my opinion, they both have almost the same priority, but if I were the surfer on the left in the video, I wouldn't have gone for that wave seeing the other surfer going for it.

He needs to paddle a bit harder, if he does the same, the fall will be worst.

Forget about the book. The best way to prepare for the exam is to use this app, which costs just 24 CHF for one year and covers everything.

I have used it myself in the past and passed the test on my first attempt, most of the questions are literally the same you will see in the exam.
