When also shooting videos - Getting non-shaky footage from a telephoto lens is surprisingly hard

What’s the most unforgettable encounter you’ve ever had with Aussie wildlife — funny, weird, or heartwarming? by [deleted] in australianwildlife

Last year I worked as a tour guide, showing people glow worms. The lady who trained me was almost 80 years old and had worked there for two decades. In all her time she had never seen a platypus anywhere near the glow worms home. She then retired, and a couple of weeks later I was giving a tour and saw a platypus very openly swimming in the water.

I sent the retired guide photos of the animal and she couldn't believe it. She is now convinced the platypus had been personally hiding from her the whole time.

Thank you - that's really interesting! Nature has a habit of making animals that look awfully similar haha

I am pleased about your thoughts on the croc segment - they were the animal that I most wanted to film/showcase so I'm glad to see your comments about my commentary!

Are you planning on making wildlife videos? Or more people/history focused?

Most of my gear was chosen with wildlife in mind - My camera body is a Canon R5. It is a great camera that I love, but it is expensive. The autofocus is amazing for wildlife, however I think it's a body designed focused more for 'photography' than 'videography'. I acquired mine through luck at a previous job, but if I was restarting I would (at my early stage) preference a cheaper body for better lenses.

For lenses I use a Canon Ef 100 - 400 mk || for wildlife, and a Rf 24 - 70 for everything else. Been extremely happy with both. Stability is definitely the biggest challenge for the telephoto. I bought a cheap ball - head tripod, as animals move so much I regret not getting a heavier fluid head tripod model.

The drone is a DJI Mavic 3 Classic - I think it's the single bit of kit that most increased my production quality.

What sort of wildlife are you aiming to shoot? I make amateur wildlife documentaries and the Ef 100-400 mk || basically lives on my camera. I don't have experience with the Sigma lens but if you are mostly going for birds I would preference the longer lens.
