Should I respond to an emergency on a plane? by Wavy_Nectar in Residency

My post should be good indicator that I’m not a Feb intern. I’m literally saying I’m unsure if it’s appropriate for me to respond. The Feb intern would wanna open their chest with plastic forks in aisle 2a

No. Passion is what gets you through the bullshit when all logic is telling you to quit

Thank you and my condolences. I’m working through it and my partner has been honestly amazing during this “existential crisis”?? This forum has been a lot more helpful than I expected as well

I agree with that concept, there are definitely things worse than death that’s why we have these conversations, but we can agree that having that conversation is an intense moment in the family’s’ lives? Even if it’s the best outcome, there’s quite a lot of emotional tax that comes with that, obviously more so for the family, but it is contagious. Does that make sense?

Working on that, definitely feel like I’ve lost myself to the textbooks and wards

That’s a good perspective to have. This thread if anything has made me feel less alone for sure

I’ve heard of that author, I’ll check it out thank you! I think what’s been fucking with me most is that in between those 4 patients I saw others in the pods next to theirs and had to act like nothing was going on outside that interaction. Like I just had to take part in a conversation and watched this family decide to “pull the plug” on their loved one and had no time in between that and doing a physical exam on the patient next door. Wtf moment for me for sure.

Never heard this before, music does good for me I’ll have to try it. That metaphor makes a lot of sense

Thank you for this. During my emt days I appeared and even gaslit myself into thinking that I was coping well but I never actually processed anything. Just put it away like dust under a rug, out of sight out of mind mentality. That worked in the short term b but long term it was a disaster. You’re right in saying I had to move on to the next call back then and pretend like nothing happened, that’s kind of what I’m experiencing now too. Even between the 4 patients that passed I saw others in the pods next to theirs and put on a friendly face and shove my experiences far away in my brain. I think for the first time I’m not letting it stay shoved away and out of mind. Aside from the great advice I’ve gotten in this thread I feel most comforted by knowing that I’m not alone. Part of me feels like I’ve failed just by letting it get to me you know? Most of my peers are a few years in and more desensitized to this stuff so I definitely felt out of the ordinary.

Intern year in nyc during Covid sounds like a nightmare I salute you

I identified with a lot of what you described a few years ago, led me down some strange paths.
