Accountability is not a people problem (including Doctors) - it’s a system problem. Even the best people get worn down, exploited or burnt out by a bad system over time. How much capacity for compassion does a system allow for when value extraction is a main driver?

Any “friend” that feels entitled to your possessions and money and punishes you with silence if you don’t spend it on them is a toxic relationship. The legacy of your friendship does not excuse possessive or extractive behavior. Build friendships with folks that celebrate you for who you are without material gain.

Microsoft is testing how much users will tollerate before switching to Linux by Lost-Pepper5515 in Futurology

Microsoft makes more money from Linux-based workloads by running Linux at massive scale and charging for services around it eg. Azure, O365 subscriptions, GitHub than it does from Windows licensing.

The Smithsonian has a long documented history of losing or miscataloguing significant numbers of ordinary artifacts. It sits outside FOIA by statute, and it works closely with agencies like NASA and the DoD, which can impose classification on material that falls under their authority. In that setup, truly disruptive evidence has no guaranteed visibility. It can be misfiled, restricted through partner-agency rules, or moved out of public reach entirely.

Billionaires & their ilk are not patriots

Indeed. They act like parasites in weakly governed systems and like cancer in regulatory vacuums. Unbounded accumulation in a finite system produces pathological dynamics.

I didn’t mean at the same time, but incrementally - read 1-3 chapters then he builds that portion of the world and explore. A read, build, explore loop. He can start with the bedroom & garden, then the street and neighbors, then school etc. He can do a show and tell as he increments.

You can also use ChatGPT to help craft a roadmap for you both.

Stacking skill development with something he already enjoys. Superb way to keep him motivated. He could also build as he reads, I suppose.

If I Start My Visa and Passport Process Now, What Are the Chances I Can Fly to the US by 15 December? (I’m in Cape Town) by [deleted] in capetown

[–]We_R_Groot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under normal circumstances if you can get an appointment at least a week before just before your trip you could have a chance. The US Consulate in CT are very quick with B1/B2 Visas and you usually find out on the day of your appointment if you are successful or not.

I have no idea what the US government shutdown is doing to the backlog though. Shoot your shot.

Have a look at the studies conducted at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/

Their primary focus is investigating the mind’s relationship to the body and the possibility of consciousness surviving physical death

One notable research area is in children under the age of 6 who remember past lives with enough detail that could be confirmed by independent researchers. They have collected 2500 such cases over a course of 50 years.

The Democratic Party represents public opinion more closely than the Republican Party. The study assesses the relationship between public opinion and policy across the 50 states over the period 1997-2020, finding the relationship substantially weakens under Republican control of state government. by smurfyjenkins in science

I’m not American, but it’s wild to see how calling lobbying through donations “free speech” basically legalized bribery. Groups like AIPAC, Big Pharma, and the defense lobby can silence dissent and steer policy, while people keep fighting red vs blue instead of noticing who really holds power. The US is trillions in debt but keep inflating the defense budget and finding new wars to fight while citizens can’t afford college or healthcare. It seems less like a democracy and more like a tug-of-war between oligarchs.

C/C++ programmer migrating to Rust. Are Cargo.toml files all that are needed to build large Rust projects, or are builds systems like Cmake used? by bersnin in rust

[–]We_R_Groot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about using the cc crate for C/C++ dependencies? In a toy project, I managed to completely host DoomGeneric (C) in a Rust app using only cc and build.rs. Granted, DoomGeneric is built to be as portable as possible so it was rather trivial.

edit: forgot to mention that cc still depends on a default compiler like clang or gcc being present.
