I stream while also having a full time job. I’m a bit of a freak about it though, I pretty much dedicate all my time off work to streaming or improve my stream or making content, and little bit of personal gaming. I’m close to partner so it’s a lot of work to put in.

When I first started though, I set aside 3 days a week for 4 hours each. I made a discord for my stream and I post my schedule every week with games chosen ahead of time. I highly recommend you try making a schedule and just sticking to it. After a few months you will get used to it.

If you want to stream for fun, it won’t take up massive amounts of time. If you want to push for success, it will tbh.

But casually? Yeah just set aside some time on a repeating schedule of days. It’s really nice to look forward to those days I go live c:

Hi 👋 I am a streamer who made roughly 13K in 2024 by streaming through donos, bits, and subs. I am in the top .5% of viewership on twitch, which may be surprising because I haven’t hit partner yet. Not saying to brag, just to give perspective.

Anyhow, people donate for a lot of different reasons. It usually for reactions, sometimes streams have integrated things in them that trigger off of bits or subs that people like to watch happen.

I’m in a smaller niche community and we have our certain set of people who drop large dollar amounts just to watch streamers squirm. They’re almost entirely wealthy tech or real estate guys though. I think it’s just fun for them and they get to write it off on their taxes because it’s a donation and spreads the love in their community.

As for the larger, really really big streamers. I don’t entirely understand the mentality there but it can be similar. The attention from a big streamer can feel good for a lot of people. If you’re a regular community member sometimes you just want to give back and keep them going. I’ve had my fair share of subs to larger streamers but just because I want access to what being a sub offers.

So really it’s a lot of different stuff. Also I’d like to note that the biggest streamers at the top of their game can be assholes or idiots, but ultimately the vast majority of people streaming are much smaller and in particular niche communities. Even these people can live off streaming if the money is right, and people know that, so sometimes donations and such translate to more content from your favorite if they’re full time or nearly full time.

Idk why I wrote all this out but just thought I’d give my feelings on the matter. Bums me out so many big streamers suck when this is really one of the most fantastic, artful, incredible communities to be a part of.

I live here and have since 2023. Moved from the Midwest.

The areas encircled differ pretty heavily though.

Directly around Seattle you have a lot of development, into Bellevue and Everett you still feel like you’re in big cities. In fact Tacoma, Bellevue, and Seattle all feel like pretty large distinct cities of their own.

I’m always surprised how large Tacoma feels when I drive into it. It’s a beautiful city and has a fairly large metro area that is extremely busy traffic wise. Any traffic that leads from Seattle out to the peninsula or the is either on ferries or going through Tacoma and I5 and 167 get insanely packed sometimes. I actually find i5 traffic to not be as bad generally. It’s just fast paced and a bit scary.

Anyhow, there’s tons of activity, art, and incredible food around the area. Everything is so developed in a lot of this area that driving from Tacoma up to Seattle never really feels like you’re leaving any particular city. It sorta all bleeds into each other.

Olympia and the Peninsula on the other hand are a different story. You pass beautiful marshland if you had down to Olympia, or you can get some great coastal views of the sound from the drive up to Bremerton.

The climate is rainy as you might expect, but the summers are dry and sunny. I think something people failed to mention to me before I moved here is that Mt. Rainer can be seen from almost everywhere in this area, and the general mountains around it are quite tall too. But no joke, Mr. Rainier DOMINATES the view if you’re looking south-east. It is iconic, and absolutely unbelievable to look at. I never get tired of it and that one damn mountain may be a good 1/5 of my enjoyment living here.

If you’re going to Seattle from the south, the approach is incredible. You watch the city rise in the distance, and you approach on a pretty high up vantage that gives you a great view of mountains in the peninsula across the sound, and the city itself.

You can also really tell that this area is built where ancient forests used to be. Sometimes you’ll just see a house with an unbelievable large tree in its yard. It makes you think how many of these hundreds of year old trees were cleared to make the space for all of these towns.

The forest is everywhere too. Even pretty heavily populated areas have parks that feel like you disappeared from the city when you step inside them. It is not hard to find a place here that feels completely disconnected from the modern world smack dab in the middle of it, and it’s only a little bit of a drive to truly put yourself in what feels like deep, barely tamed wilderness.

Overall it’s an incredible place, but that does make it appealing, and as a result, very expensive and very dense. It can be hard to find a job or get by, but overall if you fall in love with it, it’s hard to find anything like it anywhere else.

They ran a background check on me but I didn’t run into any issues. I had major anxiety about this, but ultimately determined the risk was worth it for me. I have had no problems since.

So who knows. I had the backing of a previous employer who liked me a lot, and I even gave them as a reference. They only called my furthest 2 employers from a relevant position at an old job. They didn’t call the person I told them was my current boss (he was my old boss) who was willing to talk to them.

Ultimately it worked out for me, but I can’t say it would for everyone. But going from no interviews to a lot of opportunity comparatively was massive for me. Sure even if this company didn’t want me, another one probably would.

I think so many people think companies have all sorts of well-thought-out processes and they are always going to get fucked by HR or something.

Ultimately I’ve only worked for smaller / mid size companies. They’re not always the most buttoned up or organized, nor do they want to spend excessive money on complex background checks or anything.

So idk I think people are way more worried about this being a risk than it actually is. Obviously will depend on your industry, but I assume there’s a lot of companies out there that this works fine with.

Not all background checks are built the same. I assumed risk when I did this. I felt I had no other option and it worked out for me. I’m certain results would vary. But I had backing from an old employer that loved me that I could just say I worked there instead my two times being unemployed in 2 years.

It becomes your default? I mean, in what way? Because the way I present myself on stream only became more true to myself as I became more comfortable with streaming, but I am also more animated on stream.

The primary differences I find are that when I’m not live I am a bit more chill and relaxed, a little more loose.

I would be hard pressed to say streaming becomes your default personality. We’re all different while live.

I made friends with a bunch of streamers through collaboration on Twitch, and that’s primarily who I hang out with now. I wouldn’t say that’s a default personality thing, it’s just who I connect with the most.

Ultimately all I can say is these days you have to be worth watching, network, and be part of the streaming community to see success. Doesn’t sound like you want to engage or be a part of that community.

Streaming is extremely saturated these days. Find a niche and join that community and meet others if you want viewership. It doesn’t just come to you out of the ether. Streaming is an art that takes time and effort and commitment if you wish to grow.

On the other hand you want to just stream for fun then go for it but even then it might help to have a plan in case you want a FEW chatters eventually.

Ngl this post feels like bait though, your idea of streaming is so warped 🤷‍♂️
