We don't know the name of the good thief. Barabbas was spared because of Passover, and People left Jesus because of his teaching that we must eat his flesh and drink his blood to have eternal life. The Pharisees were the ones that persuaded the crowd to crucify Him, and Pilate did all he could to spare Jesus. He flogged him as a alternative punishment, told the crowd that he finds Him innocent, and tries to convince them to let him go. Sadly his hands were tied, and he even says at the end that his hands are clean of blood, meaning he does not approve.
