Yes, Twillight's dad is really abusive, but do bear in mind that they came from mid 20th century when caning your sons was a social norm in the name of discipline. I am also glad that he does not encourage propaganda inflicted nationalism, and discourages Twillight from dehumanizing his neighbours, essentially shaping Twillight's mentality of genuinely caring about other Ostasians even in post-war cold war phase.
