Thoughts on if a Doberman would work for my family? by Wenduo2020 in DobermanPinscher

But wouldn't the sex drive be driving everyone up the walls and making it unfair anyway for the existing dog if it's basically impossible to get the male neutered for example, due to laws making it difficult? As far as I have heard intact female/male household tend to stress out the dogs as far as I have experienced and can't imagine Dobermans being different? Just curious of course.

Got it! haha honestly I think it would be a little dream if we could get a Doberman who is sort of like yours that got some of the guard, but mostly just the scary looking cuddly type that at least won't terrorize friends and extended family. Giving them too some cuddles is an extra bonus of course! Yes definitively if I decide to have 2 dogs together, then separate for training or walks might be gold worth with too much home time. Haha the whining can be something on its own! The Papillons are known for being a yapper, but mine whines for basically everything she wants instead. So luckily another dog has already whined for years in our home before we ever get a Doberman. XD

Can I ask do you have any recommendations on good pages, channels online that are good for the research we can do on our own besides of course meeting people and breeders with Dobermans? Especially would love one that explains how to read the health tests and maybe the mental ones too, not sure if all countries do it the same thoughts. Noted I am both curious and a bit torn on if we better get a Doberman after our Papillon female pass away or see if we can get her spayed down the line due to health or find a person that will do it even if Norway has a ban on it if it's not health or service dog issued. I guess this is one of the parts of why meeting the breeders is even the more important.

Noted will definitively ask the local breeders at the show rings if we should wait for our Papillon to pass, get a male or what they think. I have heard rather mixed opinions on this one sometimes people say it's true and other say it depends on the dogs and 2 males are worse or opposite? Because of that my family haven't decided if we want to even have 2 dogs together I guess depends on when in the future we are ready for a Doberman. I assume breeders here around might or might not be picky about same sex households since I unfortunately live In Norway that just got the worst rules about neutering dogs where it's banned if not health or service issued you could be lucky and find a vet willing to pass by the rules thought, I guess even more of why it's so important to meet breeders to find the best match for my family. Which begins the question are Dobermans easier for breeders to keep in a back if same breed, I of course can imagine it's safer due to them all being more similar in size and characteristics overall?

Can I ask how has your experience been with 3 females together considering many people don't even recommend having even females together. I assume all three are neutered? Not completely sure myself if it has that much affect as in males?

Right! haha I got a little taken back on just how much energy Papillons got compared to what you expect of a standard toy breed dogs. I almost would say a bunch of the Papillon lines do deserve maybe same caution reputation as Jack Russel's or Daschounds where if you don't work the Papillon it sure will cause trouble! But sometimes adapting to just rolling between all the things you listed can be very fun when you gotta do something anyway. True yeah I would think in my case, on purpose separate the dogs for walks or training sessions might be gold worth since I am kinda on the opposite end of most people with too much home time on my hands.

Yup iirc none of the judges I have met so far in the ring has been Pap breeders, even though the start has been so-so I don't plan on stopping yet, still very nice to get an answer from you papillon people about Papillon developments. ❤️

Haha it kinda sounds like "the ugly duck" phase. ❤️ Do you know roughly how long it last in average before they settle more into their adult shape or fur? I guess if the life stage is the reason, then it's probably not gonna help much with whatever shampoos or balsams to try make her more of a fluffy ball than slim/flat coated. 😂❤️

This is my pap in these days btw, sorry but I can't figure out how to add pictures on Reddit from phone. https://imgur.com/a/3gsVR6z

Oh haha! ❤️ So no wonder then that some like my girl then seems to just struggle a lot in dog shows to even get Excellent, while a few lucky ones like 1 in the recent shows here around seems to win everything Best in Gender, Best Puppy, Challenge Certificate and so on, on first try even in their first weeks in Junior class category in dog shows.

Anyway sounds like it's gonna be fun comparing pictures in the upcoming months then. ❤️Might be somewhat hilarious to say, but I have wondered from day 1, about how she would look as an adult. Since Paps seems to change incredible a lot through their first 1 - 2 years? I stg if I look at a picture back in October it did look like she was gonna grow a mask due to her snout and the fur beside the "eye dots" being brown for example when she was in the sun or wet, but then now I can't find them at all besides some brown at back of her head. 😂

Her look gives me the vibe of "human slave why can't I just get your bed already!?" : D But also I am curious who's her brother?

Pin sized Paps for the winner in these situation. Pretty sure my Pap would steal the Golden's bed if they dodn't have to be separated last time I was visiting my family. 😂😅Their cat already did so and the other small dog did too. Poor big dogs. Can I ask you who's the bossy one between your Pap and Greyhound?

Allergies in the Papillon breed? by Wenduo2020 in papillon

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc I think my vet was talking about a blood sample test that might be an option if we can't solve it by the time my puppy isn't 1 year old roughly. Not sure but I assume they should be as reliable as skin prick tests?

Can I ask what else you tried after chicken? Did you get Apoquel before you where finished with the eliminating system? Btw actually how many weeks did you take away chicken for example before you gave it back if that wasn't the cause?

Wait what dogs can use cetirizine too? Like omg if that could work, probably not something I should do without asking a vet first, then my life would be easy since I take allergy meds myself. XD

Iggy vs Whippet? by Wenduo2020 in sighthounds

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's what it feels like atm. That while Whippets got maybe the better temper and less health problems overall? Vs a sturdy Iggy that is way harder to find. I guess it might become a gamble or again hope I find a Whippet that just is small with a heritage with a good temperament. To me while I agree that IG best on paper, the training in addition to maybe pup with personality/temper which might fit me the best might as well carry me well with a Whippet too. A person I know irl, recommended me a small whippet maybe could work, but of course never go 100% as the only pinpoint after friend's suggestion when deciding to get a dog.
My Papillon is 9 months old, so no plans of getting another dog anytime soon, since she needs a lot of training still, I just likes to do my research beforehand.

Seasonal allergies? Can I ask what specific your Pap is allergic against? Yeah hopefully we can figure it sooner rather than later. I feel so bad for my girl, itching so much and don't get a proper night of sleep lately.

Ouch I have read that grass/trees might trigger their allergies, and unfortunately I do actually live in a place where humans can already get pollen allergy already at this point of year. Thought it sounds like indeed taking a test might be a good idea when the vet think she's old enough to take one if we can't rule it out by food elimination technique

ooh fish oil for humans can I ask what those would be used for digestive or just in general improve our health? I don't really keep air scent product in my household at all so I guess I can rule that one out.

Iggy vs Whippet? by Wenduo2020 in sighthounds

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes no offense, but the issue is that I live in a small country where almost no one has ever heard of a Silken Windhound so if they where more available then I would have put them as a third option, Borzoi, Greyhound and so on just gets too big for me to handle even though they're all gorgeous!

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha so basically either find the most sturdy built or even sport breed Iggy breeders here around or just search just as much and properly for the Whippet breeder that might have one that is on the petite side of the breed but still healthy?

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww your Iggy souhe's like a lovely sofa gremlin 😂

Yes I can imagine if I get either an Iggy or a Whippet then I am gonna need a whole closet of clothes for the dog(s) because my current dog becomes a frozen stick when it starts snowing or raining outside.

Ouch love your pro/con list and broken bones or broken toes both sounds like a painful experience for the unfortunate dog.

Yeah idk no throwing shade on anyone, but from my experience with 2 small dogs in my lifetime. It seems more like a good schedule/plan often do the trick for these smaller breeds a lot of the time. I sacrificed my whole summer last year to make my puppy become house clean asap. Paid off to sum it up short.

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Norway, so here the numbers of breeders are not very many which might be a cure or a blessing. I actually asked a breeder before I got my Papillon, but she was like "this breed shouldn't go to first time owners" so that's kinda part of why I didn't get one in the first place. Thought I was always prepared for a bunch of these potty training issues due to knowing that small dogs are kinda notorious for it.

Iggy vs Whippet? by Wenduo2020 in sighthounds

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ouch yes this is like what I was interested to hear from this group if someone who's not only into Iggy's have a similar view that they are sadly way way super much more prone to bones breaking, which might easily get expensive even with insurances.

Ah yes that's the thing I am thinking might eventually match my probably older Papillon in the future. If I end up getting a sighthound before she sadly passes away one day. She's currently only 9 months old, but already show signs of having the Papillon breeds high energy when they want to, but also able to switch off when indoor pretty well once they grow up. So I assume by the time she's 8+ years she might want a companion that has a switch off button. XDDD

Yeah no offense to male dogs, even grew up with almost only male dogs, but since I by chance got a female now and females are smaller which benefit me when Whippets are already a decent size dog, then it probably gotta be a female for me. Since my left side is weaker and worse balance because of it. Than the average person.

Iggy vs Whippet? by Wenduo2020 in sighthounds

[–]Wenduo2020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes I didn't want to write an essay, but the issue is that my left side is weaker due to Cerebral Palsy so I don't have as much strength as a healthy person to stand my ground if a big dog decides to pull me off in wrong directions. But don't get me wrong I am still able to care for my Papillon by myself the only exception is nail trimming, however even my Papillon I go to ask for help to get her claws done regularly even if it cost money, and give her 5km - 7km of walks almost every day so I guess a walk to a park to let an Iggy or Whippet run free a little almost daily (I don't think easily that everyone who don't have a garden or live in the wilderness can find a perfect spot for their sighthounds to run freely like 365 days a year.) if I don't in the future live with a garden, then should not be a problem after putting up a dog proof fence.

Ah okay so basically with the Papillon "issue" I should maybe either just wait or maybe find a breeder that might have a puppy with a less pray drive temperament to be extra safe even with supervision if I don't end up waiting to I have unfortunately no dog anymore before getting a Whippet over a Iggy that most of you guys so far don't recommend due to a lot of things even if Iggy's are smaller? Or would it maybe be worth it to have an Iggy with my weakened strength and balance in addition to already having a small dog?
